The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's wrestling team traveled to Eau Claire Friday afternoon to participate in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Wrestling Championship (Presented by Culver's).
 
The No. 14 Warhawks placed second in the event with 127 points, only behind first place UW-La Crosse with 159 points.  UW-Whitewater placed seven wrestlers on the evening, including five individual conference championships and a 1-2 sweep in the 174-weight class. 
 
Junior Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel), ranked third nationally, claimed first place in the 125-weight class, claiming a fall at 2:38 in the quarterfinal and at 5:41 in the finals to improve to 25-3 on the year.  Junior teammate Hazen Rice (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg), ranked sixth nationally, won the title at 141 pounds with a fall in the finals at 3:42. 
 
After taking down nationally ranked No. 3 Sawyer Massie with a pin at 5:29, senior Nate Mlodzik (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) took on senior teammate Nicholas Bonomo (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) for the 174 crown, with Mlodzik coming out on top with a pin at 2:06. Following the tournament, Mlodzik was named the WIAC John Peterson Wrestler of the Meet.
 
Senior Nick Stencel (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) took the gold at 184 pounds with falls in the first two rounds at 5:09 and 4:46, respectively, before a technical fall in the semifinals at 3:20.  Junior Riley Kauzlaric (Coal City, Ill./Coal City), ranked fifth nationally, wrapped up the gold medals for the Warhawks, taking the gold at 197 pounds.  He had a pin in the semifinals at the 3:36 mark. 
 
Senior Sonny Schieldt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) made it to the finals of the 157 weight class before falling to Grant Zamin, ranked no. 8 nationally.  Schieldt claimed a fall in the semifinals at the 4:44 mark on the way to his silver medal.   

Following the tournament, Tortorice was named as UW-Whitewater's representative on the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
 
The Warhawks return to Eau Claire for the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional Friday-Saturday, Feb. 22-23.   Top-three finishers from each of the 10 weight classes earn a spot at the NCAA Championship, which is slated for March 8-9 in Roanoke, Va., at the Berglund Center.
