Warhawk Wrestling Falls in Top-10 Battle

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team battled in a Thursday night dual match against the 2nd-ranked College of New Jersey. The #7 Warhawks were fell in the first four matches of the game, with the Lions taking the 31-6 victory in Kachel Gym.

The Takedown Hunger match started with the heavy weights, and it was a great start between the two top-10 teams. Jordan Lewis (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove North) earned the escape in the second period, but a caution tied the bout. TCNJ's Matt Coon, ranked 15th in the nation at 285, earned a late escape to take the first bout of the night.

From there, the College of New Jersey went on a small run, tallying three major decisions in a row. Brady Phelps (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) fell to the 10th-ranked Matt Griffin, 17-5 at the 125 bout. Jordan Rasof (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) faced off against the 2nd-ranked Garrett Totten, who started out with two takedowns in the first period to pull ahead. Justin Fortugno (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) fell  11-3 in the major decision that was given via riding time.

Dominik Mallinder (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) was able to get the first team points for UW-Whitewater with his 11-6 decision at 149. Mallinder pulled ahead early in the match with three takedowns in the first 5 minutes. 

Luke Swan (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) added another decision, blanking his opponent 5-0. Swan tallied a takedown in the first period, before adding an escape and riding time to take his match 5-0.

The Lions took the 165 bout by decision, with the match going down to the wire. Down 4-5, Byal had an escape in the third to tie the bout. But the Lions recorded a takedown in the final 15 seconds to take the 8-5 decision. 

The match of the night came at 174, with Bradyen Peet wrestling up at 174. Peet, ranked 3rd at 165, faced off against the top-ranked Wrestler at the 174# weight class from TCNJ. The Lions' Hunter Mays recorded a takedown at the buzzer of the first period to take the advantage. Peet was unable to grab the points back, falling on a 7-2 decision. 

The Lions finished the match with two tech falls in the final two bouts to take the match 31-6. 

The Warhawks are back in action this weekend at the Concordia-Wisconsin Open on Saturday, November 22nd. UWW Wrestling will return to Kachel Gym on December 11th to face UW-Platteville in a WIAC dual.
