Whitewater, Wis. -- The UW-Whitewater wrestling team cruised to a 40-7 win over UW-Platteville Thursday evening in Russell Arena. Prior to the dual, the Warhawks honored their seniors including
Jalen Dunson (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest),
Justin Fortugno (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills),
Danny Gaskill (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove),
Lucio Morgan (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) and
Dominik Mallinder (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park).
Brady Phelps (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) set the tone in the first bout of the evening. The freshman registered a takedown in mere seconds after the opening whistle before adding a second takedown in the period. A little over a minute into the second, Phelps locked in the cradle and the referee wasted no time in slapping the mat for the pin. Phelps' fall was recorded in 4:24 over Chris Karbash to give UWW a 6-0 lead after the 125 pound weight class.
Jordan Rasof (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) won by forfeit at 133. Fortugno and Mallinder followed a pair of technical falls. The two seniors combined for 40 points in their two bouts. Fortugno defeated Garrett Marks at 141 in 4:53 while Mallinder's 21-5 tech fall over Zack Ries was clocked in 6:30.
Luke Swan (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) had control early in his bout against Adam Whittier at 157 pounds. The junior held on as it came down to the wire late for the 5-4 decision. At the halfway point in the dual, UW-Whitewater led 25-0.
Brayden Peet (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) kept the train rolling with another high-scoring bout at 165. Peet tallied a couple of takedowns in the opening period, another in the second and then capped the bout with a four-point nearfall and finally his fourth takedown of the match to stop the battle early. Peet's 17-2 tech fall over Blake Delsman was recorded in 6:15.
Jermaine Butler (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) won by forfeit at 174. In the 184-pound weight class,
Gavin Kohel (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) used a pair of first-period takedowns to build an early lead en route to a 10-2 major over Cal Ries.
UW-Platteville got on the board with Kain Killmer's 9-0 major decision over
Tyler Haydon (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) at 197.
The 285 pounders put on a show in a thrilling end to the dual. UW-Whitewater's
Anthony Soto (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) caught his opponent off guard with a sneaky fast spin that ended in a takedown for the first points of the bout. Soto took a 6-2 lead in the battle before Platteville's Kirsch was able to counter with a takedown of his own. Soto was nearly able to get up and out as the third period wore on but Kirsch held on, using riding time to send the bout into sudden victory. In the first overtime, Kirsch was able to tally the takedown for the 9-6 decision for the 40-7 final.
Prior to the start of the dual, there was one exhibition match. Morgan defeated Trent DuMong by 12-1 major decision in the 149-pound exhibition.
