The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team traveled back to Eau Claire Friday for the first day of the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional.
The no. 14 Warhawks finished third on the day with 80.5 points, behind No. 9 UW-La Crosse and second-ranked Augsburg. The Warhawks still have nine of their 10 wrestlers in contention for placements, with six advancing to the winner's semifinals on the day.
Junior
Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel), ranked third in the nation, advanced to the semifinals at 125 pounds with a pin at 1:56 in the first round, followed by a major decision in the quarterfinals.
Ranked sixth nationally at 141 pounds, junior
Hazen Rice (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) recorded a pair of decisions to advance to the semifinals, while junior
Riley Kauzlaric (Coal City, Ill./Coal City), ranked no. 5 at 197 pounds, did the same in his bracket.
Senior
Nick Stencel (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) made it to semifinals at 184 pounds, assisted by a fall in the first round at 5:27. Freshman
Jaritt Shinhoster (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Barrington) recorded a fall at 0:27 in the first round and 1:20 in the quarterfinals to quickly claim his slot in the semifinals at 174 pounds.
Senior
Nicholas Bonomo (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) had a similarly strong performance at 165 pounds, with a pin at 0:48 in the first round and a fall at 4:50 in the quarterfinals.
In the consolation bracket, three Warhawks are still alive. Sophomore
Mac Casella (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) claimed a fall at 5:36 in the first round at 149 pounds before falling in the quarterfinals but stayed alive with a decision in his first consolation match.
Senior
Sonny Schieldt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) had a similar route at 157 pounds after losing to Grant Zamin, ranked No. 8 in the weight class.
Junior
Nick Sundberg (Woodstock, Ill /Woodstock) rounded out the trio of consolation bracket Warhawks at 285 pounds. After recording a pin at 4:16 in the first round, he fell to Konrad Ernst, ranked fourth nationally, in the quarterfinal. He bounced back with a fall at 4:27 in his consolation match.
The regional continues tomorrow with the semifinals and placement matches starting at 10 a.m. at Eau Claire.
