Box Score The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team won the American Collegiate Athletic Association Championship after winning a shootout to claim the conference title. The final score of the ACAA Final game against UC Santa Cruz was a 2-2 tie.
The Warhawks move to 15-4-2 in their season while the Banana Slugs are 8-7-4. UW-Whitewater will find out if it is selected for a bid to the NCAA Championship next week Monday, Nov. 11, during a selection show on NCAA.com starting at 12:30 p.m. Central Time.
Following the tournament,
Hozai Ceballos (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) was named Most Valuable Player of the championship. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by
Evan Donini (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West),
Trevor Johnson (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) and
Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West).
UW-W recorded two shots in the first 14 minutes of the match.
Mariano Carini (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) and
Henry Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) tallied them in the 11th and 14th minutes, respectively.
UC Santa Cruz scored first, recording a goal at the 21-minute mark.
The Warhawks countered right back, scoring in the 25th minute.
Andres Villarreal (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) took the corner kick and Carini was able to head it into the back of the net.
Taylor Ortiz (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) recorded a shot on goal in the 27th minute and
Carlos Mondejar's (Madrid, Spain/Logos International School) shot in the 39th minute was blocked by defenders as the first half ended with a 1-1 tie.
UW-W took their first lead of the game in the 53rd minute.
Steven Wright (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) scored the goal with an assist from Ceballos.
UC Santa Cruz found their second goal of the game in the 68th minute when the ball was crossed and snuck through Warhawk defenders.
Johnson and
Brian Zimdars (Galena, Ohio/Olentangy) and Johnson both recorded shots in the 76th minute, but could not get it past the Slugs. Regulation time came to an end with a 2-2 tie.
Johnson recorded a shot on goal within the first two minutes of overtime.
In the second overtime period, Whitewater found shots on goal from Zimdars and Ceballos in the 107th and 108th minutes but were unable to get the ball past the goalkeeper.
The shootout consisted of nine total shots, including five from UW-Whitewater.
Henry Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East),
Steven Wright (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) and Ceballos took and made the first three attempts.
Taylor Ortiz (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) missed his shot and
Garrett Morgando (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) scored to end the shootout with a 4-2 win for the Warhawks.
