Warhawks Draw with UWSP, but Pointers advance after PKs

Re scores Two goals in WIAC Semifinal

After 110 minutes of play, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team remained in a draw with UW-Stevens Point in the WIAC Tournament Semifinal game. However, the Pointers took the PKs 4-3 to advance to the Championship Game on Saturday.

With a wind heading directly north, the Warhawks had the advantage for the first half with the wind at their backs. Going on the offensive attack, the Warhawks put over nine shots on goal in the first half alone, with nine corners as well.

However, despite playing against the wind, it was the Pointers that put a point on the board first, scoring on a quick counterattack goal to go up 1-0 in the 17th minute.

Before the end of the half, UW-Whitewater was able to find the equalizer, clearing the advantage heading into the break. With a free kick from about 30 yards out, Luka Breslin (Dublin, Ireland/Terenure College) hit the top post of the goal, with the ball bouncing back into play. Cooper Re (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) was able to beat the Pointer defense to the ball, scoring the equalizer with just eight minutes left in the half.

After switching sides, the Warhawks were able to find a little more luck than the Pointers had against the wind. Cooper Re (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) found the break in the Pointer defense to score his second goal of the night & 4th brace of the season. Re's initial shot was blocked by the defender, but a heads-up play by the forward put the Warhwks up 2-1 early in the second half.

The Pointers were able to adjust, using the wind to assist their offense. The pressure finally paid off, with the Pointers scoring their own equalizer with just under 10-minutes remaining.

The two overtime periods remained at a stalemate, with neither team putting a shot on goal. The Warhawks had a few looks, including a shot by Tyler Chrisman (Lemont, Ill./Lemont Township) that was just in the second OT period.

With the score still knotted at 110 minutes, the two teams lined up for penalty kicks. UWSP started with two makes, but so did the Warhawks as Luke Breslin & Andriy Collins (Dublin, Ireland/Institute of Education) connected on their attempts. The Pointers had the third attempt go high, but their keeper made the save to keep UW-Whitewater off the advantage.

The fourth attempt for UW-Stevens Point began with a save from Austin Waite (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central), but was ruled a re-kick by the referee. The Pointers capitalized on the re-kick, scoring their fourth, but Hayden Saul (Iowa City, Iowa/Liberty) added his own to keep the shoot-out at 3-3.

On the 5th attempt, UW-Stevens Point scored & stopped the Warhawks from scoring to send the Pointers up to UW-Eau Claire for the WIAC Championship match.

The Warhawks will await word on how the final NPI rankings shake out. The Warhawks currently rank 25th in NPI. The selection show will air on Monday, November 10th at 10:30 CT via ncaa.com.
