The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's cross country teams each posted their best regional performances in the last decade Saturday at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships at Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wis.
The Warhawk men placed eighth out of 36 teams for their highest regional finish since 2010 (seventh). The women finished 10th out of 35 teams, their highest regional place since 2007 and 12 spots higher than their 2018 standing.
Junior
David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships for the second straight year with a runner-up finish, completing the course in a time of 24:36.8, only 4.2 seconds off the winning pace. His second-place finish is also the highest ever at an NCAA Midwest Regional meet by a UW-Whitewater men's runner.
Junior
Kyle Neuroth (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) joined Fassbender as an All-Region honoree with his time of 25:29.5, good for 29th place in the field of 252 entries. Freshman
Justin Krause (Ixonia, Wis./Pewaukee) placed 40th overall, only five spots outside of all-region recognition, after crossing the finish line in a career-best 25:47.8.

Nick Schmidt (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) finished among the top quarter of the field with his personal record of 26:14.9. Junior
Conner Hackett (Darlington, Wis./Darlington) finished 80th in 26:35.5, and junior
Clinten Woerishofer (Appleton, Wis./North) was close behind in a personal-best 26:43.1, good for 85th place.
Junior
Brian Kuehl (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) rounded out the Warhawks' seven with his 28:08.0, good for 161st overall.
Junior
Jessie Braun (Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine) led the women with an All-Midwest Region showing, crossing the finish line in a personal-record 22:55.5 in the 6-kilometer race. She placed 22nd overall in the field of 257 competitors and will learn tomorrow if she qualifies for the NCAA Championships.
Junior
Sydney Prestifilippo (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) just missed all-region standing by placing 42nd with her season-best time of 23:24.0. Sophomore
Julia Wesley (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) finished 76th in a career-best 24:04.9, and sophomore
Sarah Niehueser (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran Academy) placed 90th with a personal-record results of 24:18.4.
Freshmen
Jill Cavanaugh (Port Washington, Wis./Port Washington) and
Alyssa Dobbs (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) finished back-to-back in 125th and 126th, respectively. Cavanaugh crossed the finish line in 24:56.4, and Dobbs broke the 25-minute plateau with a 24:59.8.
Junior
Julia Fewell (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) tallied a 25:09.5 to placed 135th overall.
The NCAA Championship is set for Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Tom Sawyer Course in Louisville, Ky. The men's 8K is set for 9:45 a.m. Central Time, with the women's 6K one hour later at 10:45 a.m. Central.
Official championship qualifiers will be announced on NCAA.com on Sunday at 12 p.m. Central Time.
