The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's cross country teams each finished among the top third in their respective fields Friday at the Blugold Invitational at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, Wis.
The Warhawk women placed ninth out of 27 teams, while the men finished ninth out of 29 teams entered.
Junior
David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) topped a field of 446 runners on the men's side, winning the 8-kilometer race by just under six seconds with a time of 24:52.6, only four seconds off his personal record mark.
Junior
Conner Hackett (Darlington, Wis./Darlington) placed 28th overall with a personal-best 25:45.4. Freshman
Justin Krause (Ixonia, Wis./Pewaukee) finished 57th with a 26:13.2, and junior
Kyle Neuroth (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) was just behind in 26:21.3, good for 66th place.
Junior
Clinten Woerishofer (Appleton, Wis./North) finished among the top quarter of the field with a 26:48.6, good for 110th. Junior
Brian Kuehl (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) and freshman
Nick Schmidt (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) rounded out the varsity seven with times of 27:07.4 and 27:07.5, good for 137th and 138th, respectively.
On the women's side, junior
Jessie Braun (Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine) led UW-Whitewater with a 38th-place finish out of 343 runners with a result of 23:27.7 in the 6-kilometer race. Junior
Sydney Prestifilippo (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) was close behind with a 23:33.3, good for 43rd overall.
Sophomore
Julia Wesley (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) earned a spot in the top quarter of the field with a 24:12.0, good for 75th and only one-half second off a personal-record pace. Freshman
Paige Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) placed 122nd in 24:52.2, and was followed by sophomore
Sarah Niehueser (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran Academy) and freshman
Jill Cavanaugh (Port Washington, Wis./Port Washington), who were 130th and 131st, respectively. Niehueser crossed the finish line in 25:00.6, and Cavanaugh finished in 25:01.5.
Junior
Julia Fewell (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) rounded out the top seven by placing 149th in 25:23.5.
The Warhawks return to action next Saturday, Oct. 12, at Lawrence University's Gene Davis Invitational. The women's race begins at 10:30 a.m., with the men's event scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at Reid Municipal Golf Course in Appleton, Wis.
