The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater golf team claimed its second straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship Sunday, winning the three-day, 54-hole conference tournament by 12 strokes.
With the fourth league title in program history, the Warhawks punched their ticket to the NCAA Division III Championship for the second consecutive year. The four-day, 72-hole national championship tournament is scheduled for May 14-17 at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas.
UW-Whitewater collected a team score of 942 (315-312-315), tying its school record and WIAC Championship record set at last season's conference tournament.
Juniors
Ashley Hofmeister (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) and
CheyAnn Knudsen (Milton, Wis./Milton) each placed among the top five in the 61-player. Hofmeister finished as runner-up with a 229 (75-75-79), good for a school record in a 54-hole format. Knudsen carded the best round of the day for the team to move up to fourth place with a 233 (80-78-75), tied for the second-best 54-hole score in the program record book.
Senior
Maddie McCue (Milton, Wis./Milton) tallied a 241 (81-78-82) to place 10th, and senior
Sabrina Schreck (New Berlin, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) and junior
Kelly Storti (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) each tied for 11th. Schreck fired an 81 Sunday for her 242 (80-81-81), while Storti posted an 80 for the same score of 242 (80-82-80).
Senior
Kaitlin Bowe (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) led Warhawk individuals with a 240 (80-80-80), good for a tie for eighth place. Freshman
Ashton Sinak (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) tied for 13th with a 243 (80-79-84), and junior
Kristin Bowe (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) totaled a 245 (82-80-83) to finish 17th.
Knudsen was named UW-Whitewater's representative on the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
The Warhawks wrap up their fall season next Sunday-Tuesday, Oct. 14-16, at the Golfweek Division III Fall Invite at Baytowne Golf Club in Miramar Beach, Fla.
