The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined to win 11 individual events Saturday afternoon but each fell just short of knocking off UW-Eau Claire in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual meet on Senior Day at the Williams Center.
The Warhawk women were edged 153-141, while the men were downed 184-107.
Prior to the meet, the Warhawks recognized seniors
Michaela Matthys (Crystal Lake, Ill./McHenry West),
Stephanie Haebig (Grafton/Grafton),
Rachel Stuberg (Wauwatosa/Wauwatosa West) and
Emily Trenn (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) on the women's side, and seniors
Sam Piette (Germantown/Germantown),
David Joerres (New Berlin/St. Thomas More),
Andrew Langenhahn (Appleton/Appleton East),
Kevin Lotzer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) and
Steven Missak (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) on the men's side. Neither team finished worse than third in the WIAC in any of the last three seasons due to the contributions of the group.
Matthys and freshman
Olivia Theobald (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) led the women (7-1 overall, 2-1 WIAC) with two event wins apiece. Matthys claimed first place in the 50-yard freestyle (25.58) and the 100-yard butterfly (58.65), and Theobald was victorious in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:25.13 and the 1000-yard freestyle with a result of 11:05.14, the top mark on the team this season.
Junior
Erin Hawker (Chanhassen, Minn./Hutchinson), sophomore
Bailey Weston (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) and freshman
Jessica Lenhart (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson) also claimed recorded event wins. Hawker took the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:32.31, Weston touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:01.68 and Lenhart gave the team a sweep of the butterfly events with a 2:10.33 in the 200.
Matthys, Hawker, Lenhart and Theobald combined to place first in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:53.63.
On the men's side (6-2, 1-2), Piette, junior
Chandler Lewis (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) and freshman
Zach Noll (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) each placed first in one event. Piette and Lewis combined to sweep the backstroke events, with Piette taking the 100 in 54.76 seconds and Lewis posting a 1:58.34 in the 200 for first-place honors. Noll won the 1000-yard freestyle with a 10:09.31.
Junior
Peter Loftus (Janesville, Wis./Craig) was a runner-up in two events, collecting a 48.50 in the 100-yard freestyle and a 2:01.47 in the 200-yard individual medley.
UW-Whitewater closes the regular season next Saturday, Feb. 3, at UW-La Crosse. Events begin at 1 p.m.
