The No. 4 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team will band together against cancer by raising awareness and supporting those close to the program who've been impacted at home games during the month of April.
At this Saturday's doubleheader against No. 15 UW-La Crosse, the Warhawks will donate proceeds from ticket sales directly to the JwegStrong Fund in honor of
Justin Wegner (Naperville, Ill./Central), a freshman catcher at UW-Whitewater in 2016.
Wegner was diagnosed over the summer with the rare type of soft tissue sarcoma, a type of cancer. Since his diagnosis, he has been receiving ongoing treatment, including a 15-hour surgery, one month of radiation and six months of chemotherapy.
As part of the team's doubleheader against UW-Platteville on Saturday, April 29, the Warhawks will recognize Wegner on the field at Miller Stadium following the conclusion of the first game. The team will also recognize public address announcer Tom Lange for his 40 years of service.
Throughout the month, UW-Whitewater will sell merchandise to support cancer research, including JwegStrong wristbands.
UW-Whitewater baseball has been greatly affected by cancer over the last decade. Fomer coach Jim Miller (1987-2003) passed away in March of 2016 after a two-year battle against cancer.
