The No. 21 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team concluded its spring break trip with a pair of wins Thursday in dual matches played in California.
The Warhawks (13-4 overall) downed 40th-ranked Oberlin (Ohio) 7-2 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Claremont, and ended the day with a 9-0 triumph at Irvine Valley College in Irvine.
Opening the day against Oberlin (8-8), UW-Whitewater swept all three doubles matches to take an early lead. Senior
Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and junior
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) teamed up for an 8-4 victory at No. 1, and juniors
Alicia Beck (Bismarck, ND/St. Mary's Central) and
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) combined for an 8-3 win at No. 2.
Senior
Rachel Siemon (Crystal Lake, IL/South) and junior
Brittany Goebel (McHenry, IL/West) completed the double sweep with a 8-7 triumph at the third position.
The Warhawks claimed four of six singles matches. Beck provided the match-clinching point with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the fourth slot. Talyansky and Wallace were also straight-set winners at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots, respectively, and Humphreys survived a third-set super tiebreaker for a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) triumph at No. 1.
Against Irvine Valley (8-3), UW-Whitewater doubles teams combined to drop only eight games. Talyansky and Wallace earned an 8-5 victory at No. 1, Beck and Goebel posted an 8-2 win at No. 2 and Siemon and junior
Gabriella Gregorio (Roselle, IL/Bartlett) collected an 8-1 triumph at No. 3.
Wallace was first on the board in singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2, and freshman
Madeline Slicker (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) secured the match-clinching point with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6.
Talyansky was a straight-set winner at No. 1, and Goebel survived a first-set tiebreaker to claim a 7-6 (4), 7-5 triumph at No. 4. Beck (No. 3) and Siemon (No. 5) earned victories thanks to third-set super tiebreakers.
The Warhawks return to action Saturday, April 1, as they host Carthage at 1 p.m. and Elmhurst (Ill.) at 4 p.m. at Wangerin Courts.
