The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team posted finishers among the top two in each of the three doubles draws Friday on the first day of the Warhawk Fall Invitational at Wangerin Courts in Whitewater, Janesville Athletic Club and Premier Tennis and Fitness in Janesville.
Seniors
Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) and
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) won the No. 1 doubles title to lead the Warhawks, who competed against five other teams from Division I and NAIA scholarship institutions.
After earning a bye to the semifinals as the top-seeded pair, McGuire and Wallace downed St. Francis (Ill.) 8-2 before collecting an 8-6 victory in the championship match over UW-Green Bay.
Junior
Julie Martin (Morton, Ill./Morton) and freshman
Sabrina Palavra (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) placed second in the No. 2 flight after defeating Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) and UW-Green Bay en route to the first-place contest. They lost to the draw's No. 1 seed from Cardinal Stritch in a tiebreaker.
At No. 3, sophomore
Madeline Slicker (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) and freshman
Allie Miller (Sturtevant, Wis./Union Grove) finished as runner-up after dropping a combined four games in two wins prior.
In singles, 10 Warhawks reached the semifinal round of their respective draws. Senior
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) represents UW-Whitewater in the No. 1 draw, while Martin punched her ticket to the semis at No. 2.
Palavra and freshman
Paige Nierman (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson) will compete in separate semifinals at No. 3, and seniors
Kassie Alexander (Waukesha/South) and
Brittany Goebel (McHenry, IL/West) reached the Final Four of the No. 4 flight.
Slicker and Miller will compete for spots in the championship match at No. 5, and freshmen
Jazmyne Schoeller (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson) and
Katie Toomire (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) will face off in a No. 6 semifinal.
Singles play resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. With inclement weather expected, the Janesville Athletic Club and Premier Tennis and Fitness have been designated as indoor sites if Wangerin Courts are unplayable.
