Warhawks Sweep Singles Brackets, Women's Tennis Wraps up Fall Season

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team wrapped up its fall season with the Wisconsin Invitational on Sunday in the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison. The Warhawks won all three of the singles brackets in the Invite.

At the #1 singles bracket, Gracie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) only needed two wins to take the crown. After a first round bye, Ha swept the semifinal match against Tristin Jantz from UW-Stevens Point, 4-0, 4-0. In the championship match, Ha defeated Shelby Roth from UW-La Crosse, 4-2, 4-1.

Molly Asfeld (Waukesha, Wis./West) led the way in the #2 singles bracket, winning in a close third-set tiebreaker. Asfeld took the semifinal match 4-0, 4-1, then matched up with Caitlyn Stadter from UW-La Crosse in the championship match. Asfeld one the first set 4-1, but dropped the second 1-4. The third-set tiebreaker went to the max, but Asfeld came out on top 10-8.

In the final singles flight, Kaitlyn Remke (Johnsburg, Ill./Marian Central) faced yet another UW-La Crosse foe in the championship round. Remke only dropped one game in the semifinal match (4-0, 4-1), but had a tough challenge in the championship match against Lauren Lindow from UW-La Crosse. Both sets went 4-3, with Remke winning both of the tiebreakers at 4-3(3), 4-3(9).

In the doubles brackets, the Warhawks had 2 bronze place finishes & one fourth place. Abby Weaver & Crystina Lee (Downers Grove, Ill./Timothy Christian) finished third overall in the first doubles bracket. The pair fell in the semifinal match to the eventual champion, but bounced back to take the third-place match 6-2. 

Ashley Adkisson (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) & Megan Griswold (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) opened their day with a 6-3 win, but fell in two close matches to take fourth in the bracket. The pair had a tiebreaker match in the third-place contest, falling 6(3)-7.

In the final doubles bracket, Julia Nill (Thiensville, Wis./Homestead) & Abigail McIsaac (Fairview Heights, Ill./Belleville East) went 2-1 to take third place as well. The pair opened their day with a 6-0 win, but fell in the semifinal round. In the third-place match, Nill & McIsaac took the bronze medal with a 6-4 victory. 

With the end of their fall season, the Warhawk women's tennis team will take a break until mid February. They begin the Winter season with a dual against WashU on February 21st in St. Louis.
