The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater golf team put itself in contention for a title Friday, sitting three strokes behind leader UW-Stout after the first 18 holes at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship Presented by Culver's at Reedsburg Country Club in Reedsburg.
The Warhawks carded a 322 and are one of three teams within six strokes of the top of the leaderboard.
Sophomore
Ashley Hofmeister (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower), the defending WIAC individual champion, fired a first-round 79 and is tied for third out of 52 players.

CheyAnn Knudsen (Milton, Wis./Milton) posted an 80 to sit in a tie for sixth, and sophomore
Kelly Storti (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) is tied for 10th after tallying a first-round 81.
Junior
Maddie McCue (Milton, Wis./Milton) is tied for 13th after recording an 82, and junior
Kaitlin Bowe (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) registered an 84, good for a tie for 18th through 18 holes of play.
Playing as an individual, sophomore
Kristin Bowe (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) tied Hofmeister for the top round of the day and is tied for third after collecting a 79.
Junior
Sabrina Schreck (New Berlin, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) is 31st after finishing with an 89, and senior
Hayley Jefferson (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) is tied for 38th after putting up a 92.
Junior
Breanna Bertschinger (Waterford, Wis./Union) carded a 115 and is 52nd after the first day.
The second round of the 54-hole tournament is scheduled to begin Saturday at 10 a.m.
