The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team advanced to all three doubles finals and all six singles semifinals Saturday on the first day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship Presented by Culver's at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis.
The No. 1 doubles team of seniors
Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) and
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) cruised past UW-River Falls and UW-Oshkosh by scores of 8-0 and 8-1, respectively, to set up a showdown against top-seeded Bridget Bellissimo and Sadie Spahn in tomorrow's championship match.
Senior
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) and freshman
Paige Nierman (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson) bested UW-Stout 8-2 and UW-Eau Claire 8-5 to reach the championship at the No. 2 flight, where they'll face Hayley Clope and Alaina Bublitz of UW-La Crosse, the draw's top seed.
Senior
Brittany Goebel (McHenry, IL/West) and junior
Julie Martin (Morton, Ill./Morton), the No. 1 seeded pair at No. 3 doubles, earned a first-round bye before defeating UW-Stevens Point 8-2 in the semifinal. Goebel and Martin will take on No. 3 seed Maura Andersen and Kitren Bonine in Sunday's final.
Talyansky posted a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over UW-Stevens Point in the first round at No. 1 singles and will face Natalie Wijesinghe in the semifinals. McGuire bested UW-River Falls 6-0, 6-0 and will face Sarah Henderson of UW-Eau Claire in Sunday's semifinal.
As the top seeds in their brackets, Wallace, Martin, Nierman and freshman
Sabrina Palavra (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) all earned byes to the semifinals at the Nos. 3-6 draws, respectively.
Play continues Sunday at 9 a.m. with the final two rounds of singles before the final round of doubles is played.
