Box Score 2 The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team dropped a pair of close games Sunday afternoon against UW-La Crosse in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
The Warhawks (24-12 overall, 8-5 WIAC) dropped the first game by a score of 7-5. The Eagles (25-12 overall, 10-4 WIAC) took the second game 1-0.
UW-Whitewater opened the scoring in the top of the first inning in game one thanks to a single by freshman catcher
Nikki Mikosz (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) which plated freshman shortstop
Emily Rux (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) and right fielder
Lauren Janczak (Carol Stream, Ill./Bartlett) to take the early lead.
After scoring another run in the top of the third inning thanks to an
Amy Ricci (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) single, UW-La Crosse responded with two runs of their own to make it a one run game. The Warhawks put the pressure back on the Eagles by scoring a run in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to retake the lead. UW-La Crosse responded with a five run fifth inning to seal the victory.
Sophomore left fielder
Mallory Klotz (New Berlin, Wis./West) posted two hits and a run batted in to lead the UW-Whitewater offense. Janczak and Rux lead the team with two runs scored, while freshman center fielder
Caitlin Catino (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove),
Haley Morelli (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein),
Michayla Swanson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph), and
Maggie Hansen (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) all recorded a hit in the contest.
Freshman pitcher
Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) took the loss and moved to 14-4 on the season. Her final line was seven runs on nine hits, to go along with eight strikeouts.
In the night cap, the Eagles tallied a lone run in the bottom of the second inning which proved to be the winning run.
The Warhawks were held to two hits in the second game. Klotz and Janczak both went 1-for-3 at the plate. UW-Whitewater put some pressure on the Eagles in the top of the sixth inning with two runners on with one out but were unable to push the tying run across.
Junior pitcher
Stephanie Waller (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) took the loss, falling to 7-5 on the season. Her final line was one run on five hits with one strikeout.
The Warhawks will be back in action on May 6-8th for the WIAC Tournament where they will be the fourth seed. Check back to see where and when UW-Whitewater will play this upcoming weekend.
