Softball Wins Shortened Doubleheader over Pointers

Box Score 1 The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team's doubleheader with UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday started early and ended early. With rain in the forecast the teams decided to start ten minutes early. The Warhawks went on to win game one 12-4 in six innings before the second game was cancelled in the fourth due to inclement weather. UW-W improves to 24-10 overall and 8-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while the Pointers drop to 12-20 overall and 3-8 in the league.

Amy Ricci (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) singled in her 31st RBI of the season to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. UW-SP answered with a solo homerun in the top of the second to tie the game.

Michayla Swanson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) and Hannah Taylor (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) went back-to-back with one out in the bottom of the second to give the Warhawks a 3-1 lead and four batters later they added another on a bases loaded single by Ricci. Three more runs later in the inning made it 7-1 in favor of the home team.

The Pointers retaliated with three runs, all with two outs, in the top of the third to cut the score to 7-4.

The score remained 7-4 until the bottom of the fourth when Haley Morelli (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) went yard with two on to give UW-W a 10-4 advantage.

The Warhawks tacked on one more run in the next two innings to go on to win by the eight-run rule.

Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) pitched all six innings and struckout nine to earn her team leading 13th win of the season.

Game two started less than twenty minutes after game one but was halted in the fourth inning because of rain. The game will not count towards either team's records.

UW-Whitewater will return to the diamond on Saturday for their final regular season doubleheader. The Warhawks will travel to UW-La Crosse for a pair of games beginning at 2 pm. UW-L is a half a game back of the Warhawks for third while UW-W is just a half game back of first. The WIAC regular season winner earns the right to host the WIAC Championship and a first round bye.
