Box Score Related Links:Box Score Auburndale, Fla. – The No. 8 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team added onto their winning streak Thursday with a win against Eastern Connecticut State in non-conference play at Lake Myrtle Park.
The Warhawks (6-0) edged the Warriors 4-3 in ten innings of play.
Junior
Mike Nompleggi (Oconto Falls/Oconto Falls) got the start for UW-Whitewater. Nompleggi's finishing line was five innings, four hits, two runs, and six strike outs
Senior lefty
John Olejniczak (Valparaiso, IN/Valparaiso) tossed three innings of relief giving up two hits and had three strike outs. Sophomore
Heath Renz (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson) earned his first victory of the season.
Renz entered the game in the ninth inning and make quick work, striking out two and getting an inning ending ground out.
The Warriors (8-3 overall) struck first, scoring on a wild pitch in the forth and a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Freshman
Cal Aldridge (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) led the offense for the Warhawks finishing 2-for-3 highlighted by a solo homerun (2) in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Sophomore designated hitter
Austin Jones (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) plated a key run to tie the game in the ninth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly to right field.
Eastern Connecticut State plated one in the top half of the tenth to extend their lead to one heading to the bottom of the tenth. Renz got out of a jam in the tenth inning with a runner on third thanks to his third strike out of the game and get the offense back up to the plate.
Aldridge got hit by a pitch to lead off the tenth inning for the Warhawks.
Alex Hallenbeck (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) came into pinch run for Aldridge. Sophomore
Blake Fleischman (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) came into pinch hit and singled over the third baseman's head to move Hallenbeck to second. Thanks to a balk by a Warriors pitcher Hallenbeck advanced to third and freshman
Matt Wary (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) who pinch ran for Fleischman advanced to second.
Pinch hitter
Hayden Fenner (Ripon/Ripon) did his job by grounding out to the right side to plate Hallenbeck and move Wary to third base.
Hero of the game sophomore centerfielder
Daytona Bryden (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) came up to the plate and singled down the left-field line to plate Wary and seal the victory for the Warhawks.
UW-Whitewater continues action tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. Central Time against Southern Maine at Lake Myrtle Park.
