Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the Division III singles draw on the first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Oracle Cup in Surprise, Ariz.
After winning their first round doubles match, Humphreys and sophomore
Gabi Kitchell (Wausau, Wis./D.C. Everest) were defeated in the semifinals and will play for third place in the Division III doubles draw Friday at 5 p.m. Central Time.
Humphreys rebounded from a first set loss to defeat No. 4 seeded Brooke Donnelly of Washington & Lee (Va.) by a 1-6, 7-5, 6-0 score.
Friday's semifinal against top-seeded Caroline Casper of Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.) is slated for a 12:30 p.m. Central Time start. Casper downed Ashnaa Rao of Johns Hopkins (Md.) in three sets in the first round.
Humphreys and Kitchell started Thursday with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over fourth-seeded Kathy Joseph and Melanie Marlin of Texas-Dallas. The duo was downed 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals against No. 1 Bridget Harding and Katarina Su of Emory (Ga.).
Humphreys and Kitchell will face the No. 3 seeded team of Kaylan Griffith and Rebecca Ho of Washington-St. Louis in the third-place match.
