The Warhawks (2-0 overall), who finished the 2014-15 season ranked 26th in the nation and sixth in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, defeated Cornell 9-0 to start the evening.
UW-Whitewater finished its trip by downing Coe, ranked 13th in the region by the ITA, by an identical 9-0 score.
Against Cornell (0-2), the Warhawks took a 3-0 advantage by sweeping doubles competition. Senior captain
Ashley Miller (Racine/Union Grove) and junior
Rachel Siemon (Crystal Lake, IL/South) combined for an 8-0 triumph at No. 3. Junior captain
Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and sophomore
Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) teamed up for an 8-1 win at the top slot, while sophomores
Alicia Beck (Bismarck, ND/St. Mary's Central) and
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) capped doubled play with an 8-4 victory at the second position.
At No. 1 singles, Humphreys didn't drop a set in a 6-0, 6-0 triumph. Wallace and freshman
Gabi Kitchell (Wausau, Wis./D.C. Everest) dropped just one game apiece in wins at the Nos. 5 and 2 spots, respectively.
Beck (No. 4) and Siemon (No. 6) were victorious by identical 6-1, 6-1 tallies. Sophomore
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) finished the shutout with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at the third position.
UW-Whitewater recorded a similar start against Coe (0-1), taking a 3-0 lead through doubles play. McGuire and Beck, each All-Americans in doubles a season ago, combined for an 8-0 win at No. 2. Kitchell and Talyansky worked an 8-1 victory at the third position, while Humphreys and Wallace posted an 8-3 triumph at No. 1.
Talyansky was the first to finish in singles play, collecting a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 4 slot. McGuire clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the third position.
Humphreys and Kitchell were next to finish at the Nos. 1 and 2 slots, respectively, each winning by identical 6-3, 6-2 scores. Wallace registered a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at the No. 5 spot, and Beck completed the night with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 6.
The Warhawks host the eight-team Warhawk Invite this Saturday at 9 a.m. at Wangerin Courts.
