Related Links:Results DELAVAN, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater golf team wrapped up the first round of the 13-team UW-Whitewater Spring Fling in second place Friday at Delbrook Golf Club in Delavan, Wis.
The Warhawks shot a 327, their second lowest round of the year, and enter Saturday's final round 21 strokes behind first-place Lewis (Ill.).
Senior
Sammie Leibham (Sheboygan/North) broke a 14-year-old school record for an 18-hole round. Leibham fired an even-par 73 to lead the 70-player field and is one stroke ahead of Rachel Sweeney and Jordan Nichols of Lewis.
The previous school record was a 74, tallied by Christy Huegerich on Sept. 9, 2001, at Riverside Golf Course.
Senior
Kate Winkler (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) and sophomore
Kayla Asleson (Kenosha/Tremper) also enter the second round among the top 20 in the field. Winkler carded an 83 finish the day tied for 13th, while Asleson is tied for 16th with a score of 84.
Sophomore
Stephanie Stair (Milton, Wis./Milton) and senior
Sarah Bregant (Sussex/Hamilton) rounded out UW-Whitewater's "A" team. Stair finished with an 87 and is tied for 24th overall, while Bregant is tied for 28th with an 88.
The Warhawks' "B" team is ninth with a team score of 369. Junior
Taylor Genter (Sun Prairie/Sun Prairie) registered a career-best 80 and is tied for seventh in the tournament.
Senior
Vivian Shoemaker (San Jacinto, CA/San Jacinto) enters Saturday in the top half of the field after totaling a 90. Freshman
Jess Gruber (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) is tied for 52nd with a 99, while sophomore
Katie Kelly (Geneva, IL/Geneva) and freshman
Hayley Jefferson (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) are tied for 54th with identical scores of 100.
Freshman
Callie Edwards (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) led UW-Whitewater individuals with an 86, good for a tie for 20th through the first round. Kayla Kinney is tied for 38th with a 92, while junior
Liz Semmann (Jackson, Wis.) is 65th with a 115 and freshman
Katie Melanouris (Spring Grove, Ill./Richmond) is tied for 66th with a 120.
Prior to the start of play, Stair and her sister, Laura, a sophomore at UW-Oshkosh, honored their grandfather, who recently passed away due to Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, most commonly referred to as ALS or "Lou Gehrig's Disease". Each member of each participating team donned a blue and white ribbon to bring awareness to the disease, which is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
In addition, Bregant, Leibham, Shoemaker and Winkler were recognized for their contributions to the program prior to playing their final collegiate tournament.
A brief moment of silence was also held in honor of those who serve or have served in the military.
