Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The No. 1 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team registered one of its best scoring performances in school history Friday as part of a two-game split at Chain O' Lakes Park.
The Warhawks (2-1 overall) downed William Paterson (N.J.) 22-1 to start the day before seeing their 13-game winning streak dating back to last season snapped in a 9-3 setback against Rowan (N.J.).
In the opener, UW-Whitewater pounded out 21 hits and tallied eight runs in the second inning, five in the third and nine in the fourth to account for its third-highest run output in one game in school history.
Senior pitcher
Colin Grove (Beloit/Memorial) earned the win, his first of the season. The left-hander scattered eight hits over six innings with no walks and three strikeouts, inducing eight fly-outs and four groundouts by the Pioneers (8-2).
Sophomore right-hander
Austin Finn (Oconomowoc/Kettle Moraine) tossed one inning of scoreless relief in the seven-inning contest, which was shortened by mercy rule.
The Warhawks took control of the contest with an eight-run second inning, highlighted by a two-run triple by senior catcher
Mike Mierow (Brookfield/Central), a two-run single by senior third baseman
Adam Gregory (Edgerton/Edgerton) and a three-run homer to deep left by senior second baseman
Nick Kuhlmann (Minneapolis, MN/Minneapolis Southwest) with two outs. Senior centerfielder
Kyle Haen (Madison/Edgewood) also contributed with an RBI single during the frame.
A five-run third inning featured run-scoring hits by senior left fielder
Trey Cannon (Palatine, IL/Palatine), senior shortstop
Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere) and junior designated hitter
Dane Burman (Milton, Wis./Milton), and increased the UW-Whitewater lead to 13-1 through three.
In the fourth, Cannon, Pierce, Gregory and Kuhlmann all delivered run-scoring singles before Haen cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right field. Freshman pinch hitter
Daytona Bryden (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) capped the frame with a run-scoring single to right center.
Haen led UW-Whitewater with three hits, four runs scored and four runs batted in. Kuhlmann plated five runs, while Gregory drove in three. Eight of the Warhawks' nine hitters finished with two hits or more.
In the nightcap, the Profs (7-5), who received votes in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25 Poll, put runners on in each inning and tallied 20 hits against UW-Whitewater.
Sophomore pitcher
Austin Jones (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa West) took the loss for the Warhawks, his first of the season. Sophomore left-hander
Donnie Manke (Lodi/Lodi) and freshman righty
Lake Bachar (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) finished up in relief. The staff stranded 16 Rowan base runners.
Burman led UW-Whitewater with a 3-for-3 performance. Haen and Bryden totaled two hits apiece.
Freshman right fielder
Will Helbing (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) put the Warhawks on the board with a two-run double down the right field line in the bottom of the second, giving the team a 2-1 advantage.
From there, the Profs plated seven unanswered runs to take control of the contest.
UW-Whitewater tacked on a run in the bottom of the eighth as Pierce brought home Haen on a sacrifice fly.
The Warhawks look to return to their winning ways tomorrow against Rutgers-Camden (N.J.). First pitch is slated for 9 a.m. Central Time at Chain O' Lakes Stadium.
