Golf Places Fifth at Illinois Wesleyan

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater golf team improved by 14 strokes in its second round of play Sunday to finish fifth at the 10-team Illinois Wesleyan Fall Classic at Crestwicke Country Club in Bloomington, Ill.
 
The Warhawks carded a two-round score of 712 (363-349), finishing 20 strokes shy of fourth-place North Central (Ill.). Carthage won the tournament with a score of 653.
 
Junior Sammie Leibham (Sheboygan/North) earned UW-Whitewater's top finish, tying for eighth out of 56 golfers with a 170 (88-82). Freshman Stephanie Stair (Milton, Wis./Milton) was close behind with a 175 (88-87), good for a tie for 14th.
 
The Warhawks' three other players also placed within the top half of the field.
 
Sophomore Kayla Asleson (Kenosha/Tremper) fired identical rounds of 92 to finish with a 184, good for 25th place.
 
Seniors Vivian Shoemaker (San Jacinto, CA/San Jacinto) and Kate Winkler (Kewaskum/Kewaskum) each improved on the second day to tie for 27th with a score of 187. Shoemaker followed her first-round 99 with an 88 on Sunday, while Winkler followed up Saturday's 95 with a 92 on Sunday.
 
The Warhawks return to the course this Friday and Saturday at the UW-Whitewater Fall Classic. Play at Delbrook Golf Club, the team's home course, begins at 1 p.m. Friday and continues at 9 a.m. Saturday.
