First Half Barrage Pushes Men’s Soccer to Victory

Box Score The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team posted its first win of the 2014 season Sunday, defeating Lake Forest 5-2 in a non-conference match at Lake Forest, Ill.
 
The Warhawks (1-1 overall) registered four first-half goals, all in the first 25 minutes of play. Senior captain John Gottwald (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) and junior forward Sam Novak (Milton, Wis./Milton) paced UW-Whitewater's balanced offensive attack with one goal and one assist apiece.
 
The Foresters (1-1) outshot the Warhawks 19-14 and held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks but drew a red card in the 22nd minute, playing a man down for the final 68-plus minutes of the contest.
 
Junior defender Jordan Wilkins (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) started the scoring in the fourth minute with an unassisted tally. Nine minutes later, senior defender Ryan Reid (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) took a pass from Novak and fond the back of the net.
 
Gottwald recorded what proved to be the game-winner in the 22nd minute, unassisted. Novak scored just under two minutes later to increase the UW-Whitewater lead to 4-0.
 
Lake Forest got on the board in the 31st minute to draw within three of the Warhawks.
 
In the second half, UW-Whitewater moved its lead back to four in the 64th minute with a goal from junior forward Michael Salm (Grafton, Wis. /Grafton). Gottwald earned the assist on the play.
 
The Foresters scored their second goal of the affair in the 69th minute, but the Warhawks' defense didn't budge over the final 20 minutes.
 
Senior goalkeeper Josh Rohde (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) started and picked up the win, totaling one save in just under 17 minutes of action. Junior Alex Buchman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) and freshman Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) also played in goal for UW-Whitewater. Buchman recorded four saves, while Lucatorto had one.
 
The Warhawks return to action Friday at home against Edgewood at 5 p.m. The match is the first of a men's-women's doubleheader against the Eagles at Fiskum Field.
