Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. - The UW-Whitewater softball team improved to 5-1 this season with two wins Sunday. UW-W topped SUNY Potsdam 4-2 and followed with a nine inning 3-1 win over Middlebury.
In the first game,
Amy Ricci (Gurnee, IL/Warren Township) and
Samie Seamon (Antioch, IL/Antioch) combined for four of the team's eight hits to lead the Warhawks offensively.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third, UW-W tied the game with two runs on three hits.
Kelly McGrail (Tinley Park, IL/V.J. Andrew) got things going with a one-out single. Seamon made it back-to-back singles and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Ricci's two-out single plated both runs.
Seamon led off the bottom of the fifth with a double and moved to third on a ground out. Ricci knocked in Seamon with another single to give the Warhawks the lead and the win.
Bekka Houda (Lisle, IL/Lisle) picked up the win on the mound to improve to 2-1. The righty threw three innings striking out four without issuing a walk.
Scoreless through regulation in game two, Whitewater posted a run in the top of the eighth but Middlebury responded to knot the game 1-1 in the bottom of the inning. Using the international tiebreaker format,
Deven DuCharme (Hudson/Hudson) started the top of the ninth on second base.
Jo Jablonski (Palatine, IL/Palatine) tagged a one-out double to score the go-ahead run.
Paige Evangelista (Wheaton, IL/North)'s sacrifice fly gave Whitewater an insurance run and the defense held to secure the win.
Mimi Ramirez (Chicago, IL/Trinity),
Laura Eichenold (Elmwood Park, IL/Trinity) and
Chelsey Schobert (Belmont/Belmont) each posted two hits in the game.
Kelynn Sporer (Chilton/Chilton) notched the complete game win with nine strikeouts and two walks.
The Warhawks return to the diamond Tuesday with two more games.
