Box Score LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. - The UW-Whitewater baseball team improved to 4-0 this spring with a 6-4 win over Western New England Friday.
Western New England opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first. The Warhawks cut the deficit in half in the top of the second.
Michael Gonzalez (Delavan/Delavan-Darien) was hit by pitch with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single to left field by
Trey Cannon (Palatine, IL/Palatine).
WNE took a 3-1 lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth but UW-W answered with one run in the top of the fifth and plated two in the top of the sixth to knot the score at 3-3. Casey Powered opened the sixth with a double to left field.
Mike Mierow (Brookfield/Central) reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on an error allowing Power to cross home. Mierow advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and came in to score on a wild pitch.
Western New England plated a run in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-3 lead. After two scoreless innings,
Nick Kuhlmann (Minneapolis, MN/Minneapolis Southwest) walked to lead off in the top of the ninth. He moved to second on a wild pitch and
Kyle Haen (Madison/Edgewood) drew a walk to put two runners on.
Jared Fon (Germantown/Germantown) tagged a double to center field to score Kuhlmann and Haen came around to score on another wild pitch to take a 6-4 lead.
The Warhawk defense shut the door in the bottom of the inning for the win.
Power was a perfect 2-2 from the plate with Haen adding two hits of his own.
Brock Liston (Darien, IL/Joliet Catholic) picked up the win on the mound for his first of the season allowing one hit while striking out two in 2.1 innings of work.
UW-W will take on Elmhurst College Saturday at 11:00 to continue play in the Russmatt Invitational.
