Box Score 2 LEESBURG, Fla. - The UW-Whitewater baseball team topped Benedictine 11-5 and 17-3, both contests shortened to seven innings, in a doubleheader in their second day of competition in the Russmatt Invitational this spring.
UW-W rattled off 35 hits scoring 28 runs in the two game series.
Kyle Haen (Madison/Edgewood) highlighted the twinbill going 6-8 from the plate with four runs scored and a RBI.
In the opener, the Warhawks jumped out to a big lead registering four runs in the bottom of the inning. UW-W added two more in the bottom of the second to seal the game. Whitewater plated two more in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead but Benedictine cut the margin in half with four runs in the top of the fifth. The Warhawk defense got out of the inning and the offense provided all the necessary support to put the game out of reach with a single run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Haen was perfect at the plate, 4-4, with three runs scored including a homer, his first for the season.
Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington) went 3-3 in the batter's box plating four runs for Whitewater off a double and homerun. Jaren Fon,
Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere) and
Mike Mierow (Brookfield/Central) each notched two hits in the game.
Curtis Morgan (Green Lake/Green Lake) picked up the win on the mound for the Warhawks allowing eight hits and four runs while striking out two in five innings of work.
Whitewater's bats didn't cool off in the nightcap with UW-W posting 19 hits in the win. UW-W scored in five of the seven innings.
The Warhawks jumped out to another quick lead plating two runs in the top of the first inning, adding six in the second and three more in the third to put the game out of reach. UW-W added an insurance run in the fifth and brought in five more in the top of the sixth to cruise to the 17-3 win.
Casey Power (Ontario, Canada/Belle River) had the big bat in game two, recording hits in each of his four at bats adding five RBI. Haen, Fon, Friend,
Michael Gonzalez (Delavan/Delavan-Darien) and
Nick Kuhlmann (Minneapolis, MN/Minneapolis Southwest) each posted multiple hits in the game.
On the mound,
Connor Hurst (Waunakee/Waunakee) picked up the win after striking out two, walking one and allowing five hits and no runs in five innings.
UW-W, 3-0 this season, will face Western New England at 9:30 Friday morning.
