Men's Swimming and Diving Squeak by Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Whitewater men's swimming and diving team remained a perfect 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in WIAC action as it defeated UW-Eau Claire by a margin of 14 points (157-143), the closest margin of victory this season.

In the 1,000, Jake Shackelford (Wauwatosa/Wauwatosa East) (10:12.86) and John Devroy (Kenosha/Bradford) (10:18.36) went 1-2 to start the individual events and Andrew Staszak (Franklin/Greendale) finished fourth (10:28.51). Not long after, Josh Kanute (Geneva, IL/Marmion Academy) out-touched UW-EC's Spencer Rose by 0.21 in the 200 free to take the win in a time of 1:48.55. Ryan Stuart (Frankfort, IL/Lincolnway East) finished third (1:50.22) and Paul Hill (Jefferson/Fort Atkinson) placed fifth (1:51.90) to score points for the Warhawks.
 
In the 50 free, Alex Gidlow (Aurora, IL/Metea Valley) was runner-up with a time of 22.81 while Hill (22.98) and Stuart (23.02) both scored points in fifth and sixth, respectively. Gidlow also placed second in the 100 free, swimming a 50.05, 0.10 behind the winner. James Rodney (Barrington, IL/Barrington) finished fourth with a 50.68 to add points for UW-W.
 
Kanute earned his second victory of the day in the 500 freestyle in 4:56.83 and Stuart placed third in 5:04.19.
 
In the 100 backstroke Joe Devroy (Kenosha/Bradford) and Dan Bielski (Chanhassen, MN/Minnetonka ) took the top two spots, as Devroy swam a 54.34 and Bielski a 57.04. Devroy also took top honors in the 200 back with a time of 2:00.49 followed closely by Shackelford with a 2:02.78.
 
In the 100 breaststroke, Spencer Twining (Janesville/Parker) finished second (1:01.50) and Kyle Amundson (Janesville/Janesville Parker) finished fifth (1:04.51) to add to UW-W's total. Freshman Alex Carroll (Downers Grove, IL/Downers Grove North) took second in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:21.55 and Twining was less than two seconds behind to finish fourth (2:23.32).
 
John Devroy (Kenosha/Bradford) swam a 1:59.31 in the 200 fly to take top honors and Tony Heilberger (Sheboygan/Sheboygan South) took third (2:05.12). Devroy was second in the 100 butterfly with a 54.73, .05 behind the Blugolds' Ryan Young (54.68). Ben Wynn (Glendale/Nicolet) (55.36) and Bielski (56.02) took third and fourth, respectively.
 
In the 200 medley relay the team of Joe Devroy (Kenosha/Bradford), Twining, Wynn and Gidlow swam a 1:39.85 to place second. In the 400 freestyle relay Kanute, Wynn, Stuart and Gidlow also finished second with a time of 3:19.16.

Bielski turned in a second place finish in the 200 IM with a 2:03.44. Shackelford finished third with a 2:07.26 and Sam Bowman (Onalaska/Onalaska) finished fourth with a 2:07.70.
 
In the diving well, Glen Brinkman (Kenosha/Bradford) won both the one meter (244.90) and the three meter (267.95). Keefer Kuhl (Kenosha/Bradford) finished second in both events, scoring a 237.45 in the one meter competition and a 245.80 on the three meter board.

UW-Whitewater will wrap-up the regular season when the Warhawks travel to UW-La Crosse February 8.
