Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Warhawk softball team remained unbeaten this season with two wins Friday against Carroll University. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 2 in Waukesha, Wisconsin but was rescheduled for Friday afternoon in Whitewater due to field conditions. UW-W won the first game 3-1 and followed with a 3-0 shutout of the Pioneers to improve to 14-0 this season. Whitewater is tied for thirteenth in the latest
National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll.
UW-W, the visiting team in the doubleheader due to the venue change, scored the only runs it would need in the top of the first inning.
Amanda Mertes (Des Plaines, IL/Elk Grove) led off the game with an infield single and stole second.
Mimi Ramirez (Chicago, IL/Trinity) doubled to left center to put the first two runners on for Whitewater. A passed ball and single up the middle scored Mertes and Ramirez to give the Warhawks a 2-0 lead after half an inning.
Whitewater added an insurance run in the fourth with
Morgan Krisch (Plainfield, IL/Central) singling up the middle to lead off the inning and scoring on the next at bat, an RBI double to right center off the bat of
Emily Epifanio (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South).
Carroll came back in the bottom of the seventh with a run but the Warhawk defense held on for the win.
Epifanio led all hitters in the game with two hits in two at bats and two RBIs.
Joanne Jablonski (Palatine, IL/Palatine) and
Mimi Ramirez (Chicago, IL/Trinity) each posted two hits in the game.
Senior righty
Katie Boyle (Greendale/Thomas More) allowed just one hit in the first six innings on the mound and picked up the win with four strikeouts and no walks.
Bekka Houda (Lisle, IL/Lisle) came in for relief in the bottom of the seventh to finish out the game for the Warhawks and register the save, her second of the season.
The second game played out similar to the first. A two-run inning was all Whitewater would need to add a tally to the win column.
After two scoreless innings, Mertes got things going for UW-W at the plate with a lead of single through the right side. Krisch put two runners on with a single to right field and Epifanio loaded the bases with a single to left field.
Samie Seamon (Antioch, IL/Antioch) made it three consecutive singles with an RBI shot up the middle.
Laura Eichenold (Elmwood Park, IL/Trinity)'s fielder's choice plated another run for the Warhawks to give Whitewater a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning.
Only one more run would be added to the scoreboard in the game. Krisch's solo blast over right center in the top of the fifth gave UW-W a three-run cushion. The homer is her third and counts for her twentieth RBI this season.
Krisch was the only player to post multiple hits in the game going 3x4 from the plate with two runs and an RBI.
Houda picked up the complete game win on the mound for UW-W allowing just three hits while striking out five and walking none.
Whitewater is set for four more home games this weekend with a doubleheader against St. Norbert College beginning at 12:00 pm Saturday. The game was originally scheduled for a different start time but due to the weather forecast the first pitch time has been moved up. Sunday's schedule has the Warhawks hosting the University of Chicago for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00.
