Pick Your Poison, Softball Does it Every Which Way to Stout

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Whether a pitching purist or a fan of merry-go-round offense, you got both in Whitewater's doubleheader sweep of UW-Stout in Menomonie Saturday afternoon.  UW-W won the first game 5-0 on Katie Boyle (Greendale/Thomas More)'s one-hitter, then clubbed a 22-3 shortened game in the nightcap.

Whitewater scored the only runs Boyle needed in game one in the top of the first inning on Emily Epifanio (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South)'s two run, one out double.  The Warhawks tacked on a bit of insurance in the second, with Amanda Mertes (Des Plaines, IL/Elk Grove) bringing home the team's third run with a single and Epifanio singled to collect her third RBI of the game.

Meanwhile, Boyle, who allowed the first Blue Devil batter of the game to reach first on a walk, kept everyone else off the base paths.  That streak ended with one out in the fourth, with a Stout single.  That runner stole second base, the only time in the game Stout had a runner in scoring position.

UW-W tacked on a fifth run in the sixth, combining a single, a Stout error, and a sacrifice for the 5-0 lead.

The leadoff batter in the Stout sixth walked, but Boyle and the Warhawk defense did not allow any runner to advance to second with three straight fielder's choice outs.

Boyle gave up the one hit and two walks, with five strikeouts, in seven innings to raise her record to 11-1 and lower her earned run average to 1.51.  It was Boyle's best outing since she threw a five inning (run differential rule) perfect game against the University of Southern Maine March 28, 2012.  It was also the nineteenth one-hitter in school history.

Epifanio and Mertes, with two hits apiece, led Warhawk batters.

Whitewater exploded in game two, with the 22 runs the most UW-W has scored since plating 23 in a win over Aurora University April 13, 1996 -- the school record.  The 22 runs is also tied for tenth in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record book.  The 23 hits Whitewater compiled is second in the school record book (25 vs. Southern Maine 3./28/12), and tied for fifth in WIAC history.

The first inning, where neither team scored, was a hoax.

UW-W began rolling with Kelly McGrail (Tinley Park, IL/V.J. Andrew)'s two run single in the second.

The dam burst in the third, when the Warhawks pushed across nine runs.  The RBI's came on a Samie Seamon (Antioch, IL/Antioch) walk, Kelsey Schobert's single, a three run double by McGrail, and Morgan Krisch (Plainfield, IL/Central)'s coup de grace -- a grand slam.

Whitewater added six more in the fourth, beginning with a leadoff homer by Seamon.  Mimi Ramirez (Chicago, IL/Trinity), Amy Rink (Crystal Lake, IL/Central), Caitlin Snyder (Burlington/Catholic Central), and Morgan Parise (Sheboygan/North) contributed run scoring singles.

UW-W ended the onslaught with five runs in the fifth, three on Elaina Caron (Romeoville, IL/Romeoville)'s pinch hit home run, and two on Paige Evangelista (Wheaton, IL/North)'s round-tripper.

UW-W, tenth in the NFCA Division III poll, is 22-3 overall and 5-2 in the WIAC.  Stout is 18-8 and 6-4 in league play.  Whitewater will stay in Menomonie to play UW-River Falls Sunday, with the doubleheader beginning at 10:00.  The next home games for UW-W will be Tuesday at 3:00, with UW-Platteville visiting van Steenderen Field.  Van Steenderen Field is west of Perkins Stadium and northwest of Kachel Fieldhouse on the north end of campus.
