Warhawks Top La Crosse to Up Mark to 20-1

Box Score Mimi Ramirez (Chicago, IL/Trinity) drove in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning in tenth-ranked UW-Whitewater's 4-3 win over UW-La Crosse Monday at van Steenderen Field in Whitewater, Wisconsin.  Whitewater improved to 20-1 overall and 3-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  UW-La Crosse is 16-7, and 4-3 in league play.  Monday's schedule had the teams set for a doubleheader, but the second game had to be delayed in the fourth inning because of lightning, then suspended when field conditions deteriorated.  By rule, the game is not complete and does not count as a win or loss for either team until five innings have been played. No date has been set to resume the game.

Whitewater opened the scoring, with Samie Seamon (Antioch, IL/Antioch)'s one out double setting the table.  Paige Evangelista (Wheaton, IL/North)'s two out single to center drew first blood, 1-0.

La Crosse scored single runs in the top of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-1 lead midway through the sixth.

Morgan Krisch (Plainfield, IL/Central) led off the last half of the sixth, reaching base with a hit by pitch.  The next batter, All-American catcher Emily Epifanio (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South), drove the ball over the left center fence for her fourth home run of the year, to tie the game, 3-3.

In the top of the seventh, La Crosse threatened with a leadoff single, with the runner advancing to second on a sacrifice.  Whitewater's Katie Boyle (Greendale/Thomas More) struck out the next Eagle batter, and induced a ground ball to keep the game tied.

Evangelista singled the first pitch of the bottom of the seventh through the right side.  Courtney Smith (St. Charles, IL/North) came in to pinch run for Evangelista.  Kelly McGrail (Tinley Park, IL/V.J. Andrew) sacrificed Smith to second.  A ground ball off the bat of Amanda Mertes (Des Plaines, IL/Elk Grove) moved Smith to third.  Ramirez' two out hit through the left side pushed across the winning tally.

Evangelista and Ramirez had two hits apiece, out of seven for the Warhawks.  Eagle designated hitter Kelli Anderson went 2x3 to lead UW-L batters, who also totaled seven hits.

Katie Boyle (Greendale/Thomas More) picked up the win, and raised her mark to 10-1 with the complete game seven-hitter.  She allowed one earned run, striking out three with no walks.  Lauren Beres, 8-6, took the loss for La Crosse.  All four of the runs she yielded were earned, with three walks and three strikeouts.

UW-Whitewater will travel to UW-Oshkosh Tuesday for a doubleheader with the Titans.  The next home game for UW-W is set for Wednesday at 3:00 with Illinois Wesleyan University visiting van Steenderen Field.  As always, with unpredictable Wisconsin spring weather, any schedule changes will be posted on the UW-W softball schedule page.
