Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The weather may have forced the Warhawks out of Whitewater Saturday but it couldn't keep the team from adding two tallies to the win column. Whitewater, ranked tenth in the nation, topped UW-Superior 8-0 in five innings in the opener and won 3-2 in the nightcap. Rain and snow have created poor field conditions throughout the state, forcing many schools to reschedule games and change sites. The doubleheader Saturday was scheduled for play in Whitewater but was moved to Platteville and played on the turf on in UW-P's football stadium.
The first game was relatively quiet through three innings until a barrage of hitting by UW-W led to a short inning game. The first 3.5 innings were a defensive battle until a
Kelly McGrail (Tinley Park, IL/V.J. Andrew) single in the bottom of the fourth brought
Courtney Smith (St. Charles, IL/North) across the plate for the first run of the game.
The Warhawk defense held in the top of fifth and UW-W headed back to the plate.
Mimi Ramirez (Chicago, IL/Trinity) and
Morgan Krisch (Plainfield, IL/Central) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. A passed ball and an error plated Ramirez from second during the next at bat. A Yellowjacket error followed by a single off the bat of
Laura Eichenold (Elmwood Park, IL/Trinity) led to two more Warhawk runs.
Joanne Jablonski (Palatine, IL/Palatine) walked to put two runners on.
Paige Evangelista (Wheaton, IL/North) singled to left field bringing in another run. McGrail walked to load the bases and Ramirez singled to score a run and keep the bases loaded.
Megan Smith (Elgin, IL/St. Edward Catholic) entered the batter's box as a pinch hitter and notched a two out double to left center to score two and end the game.
In the fifth inning alone, the Warhawks rattled off seven runs on six hits. UW-W totaled 11 hits in the game.
Ramirez was perfect at the plate going 4x4 with an RBI and a run scored. McGrail added a 2x2 performance in the batter's box with an RBI and run.
Senior righty
Katie Boyle (Greendale/Thomas More) picked up her ninth win of the season on the mound for UW-W. She allowed just two hits while striking out six and not issuing a walk in five innings.
The second game was a much different story.
Samie Seamon (Antioch, IL/Antioch) put the Warhawks on the board first with a lead off homerun to right center in the bottom of the second inning.
Superior evened the score with a homer in the top of the third.
Whitewater struck back in their half of the third inning with two runs off of four hits. McGrail singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ramirez.
Sarah Fisher (Greenfield/Greenfield) singled in the next at bat, advanced to second on the throw and scored McGrail. Krisch tagged a double to left center to plate Fisher to give UW-W a 3-1 lead after three innings.
UW-S used a homer in the top of the sixth to lessen the gap to one but the Warhawk defense closed out the game for the team's nineteenth win.
Seamon went 3x3 from the plate with an RBI and run. Fisher and Krisch added 2x3 performances at the plate, each with an RBI and run scored.
Sophomore righthander
Bekka Houda (Lisle, IL/Lisle) picked up the complete game win, her ninth of the season, with seven strikeouts and no walks.
Whitewater is 19-1 this season and 2-0 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. Superior falls to 9-14 and 0-6 in league play.
The Warhawks are scheduled to return to Platteville's football stadium Sunday for a doubleheader against UW-La Crosse at 6:30pm and 8:15pm.
