Warhawks Win Two, Now 8-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The UW-Whitewater softball team tallied two more wins Tuesday to remain unbeaten, 8-0, this season. The Warhawks started off the day with an 8-5 win over Western Connecticut State University and followed with a 17-0 rout of Buena Vista that ended after five innings via the run-rule.

UW-W struck first against WCSU with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Emily Epifanio (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South) led off the inning with a single. A sacrifice bunt moved pinch runner Courtney Smith (St. Charles, IL/North) into scoring position. A single up the middle off the bat of Laura Eichenold (Elmwood Park, IL/Trinity) plated Smith as Eichenold advanced all the way to third on the throw. Chelsey Schobert (Belmont/Belmont) drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Whitewater executed a suicide squeeze with a bunt from Joanne Jablonski (Palatine, IL/Palatine) scoring Eichenold to take a 2-0 lead in the game.

Western Connecticut evened the score in the top of the fourth off of two hits.

The Warhawks fired back in their half of the inning. Jablonski's two-out triple to right center scored one and a Colonial error allowed another run to cross the plate giving Whitewater a 4-2 advantage after four innings.

WCSU used a double in the top of the fifth to plate a run and make the score 4-3 but four runs in Whitewater's half of the inning but the game out of reach. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for UW-W. Jablonski tagged her second triple of the day, this time to left center, to bring three runs across the plate. Kelly McGrail (Tinley Park, IL/V.J. Andrew) followed with a double down the left field line to plate Jablonski.

The Colonials scored one run in the top of the sixth and another in the top of the seventh but the Warhawk defense quickly thwarted any WCSU momentum for the 8-5 win.

Jablonski led UW-W at the plate with a 2x2 performance, both triples, and added five RBIs. Samie Seamon (Antioch, IL/Antioch) was also perfect in the batter's box going 2x2. Eichenold added a multi-hit performance registering two hits in three at bats with two runs scored.

Senior right hander Katie Boyle (Greendale/Thomas More) picked up the win on the mound for UW-W. She allowed eight hits and struck out six in seven innings pitched. Boyle is 4-0 this season.

In the second game of the twinbill, Whitewater's bats stayed hot. Amanda Mertes (Des Plaines, IL/Elk Grove) set the tone with a lead off triple to right center. Back-to-back singles from Mimi Ramirez (Chicago, IL/Trinity) and Morgan Krisch (Plainfield, IL/Central) plated one and put two more runners on the base paths. Epifanio cleared the bases with a homerun over the left field fence. Two singles, a walk and an RBI groundout added another run giving UW-W a 5-0 lead after half an inning.

The first run was all Whitewater would need as the Warhawks went on to score three more in the top of the third, six in the top of the fourth and three in the fifth while shutting out BVU.

Five Warhawks posted multiple hits in the game led by Eichenold's 3x3 performance. Mertes, Ramirez, Epifanio and Seamon all added two hits apiece and combined for six RBIs.

Sophomore righty Bekka Houda (Lisle, IL/Lisle) notched her fourth win of the season on the mound allowing just two hits in three innings pitched while striking out six and walking none.

UW-Whitewater will have two more games Wednesday at 11:00 and 1:00 EST against Middlebury and St. Olaf respectively.
