Softball Takes a Pair, Now 4-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 UW-Whitewater won twice in Clermont, Florida Saturday, topping Buffalo State 3-0 and defeating Concordia University (WI) 7-2.

In game one, UW-W broke a scoreless game with two runs in the third. With one out Mimi Ramirez (Chicago, IL/Trinity) walked and moved to second on a single by Morgan Krisch (Plainfield, IL/Central)Emily Epifanio (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South) doubled to right to score Ramirez.  A fielder's choice, taking an extra base and a wild pitch plated pinch runner Sarah Fisher (Greenfield/Greenfield) with the second tally. 

The Warhawks went small ball again in the sixth, combining two singles and two fielder's choices for an insurance run.

Krisch and Joanne Jablonski (Palatine, IL/Palatine) had two hits each to lead Warhawk batters.

Senior righthander Katie Boyle (Greendale/Thomas More) went all seven innings to pick up the shutout for UW-W, giving up just three hits.  Boyle walked one and struck out five while upping her season mark to 2-0.

In game two, the Warhawks got on the board in the top of the first with the help of a wild pitch and a Concordia error.  Concordia tied the game in the bottom of the second.

Whitewater scored what proved to be the winning runs, three of them, in the fourth.  Jablonski doubled to left, and Kelly McGrail (Tinley Park, IL/V.J. Andrew) followed with another two base hit for the first run of the frame.  Amanda Mertes (Des Plaines, IL/Elk Grove) singled to score McGrail.  Mertes stole second and came home on a Krisch single to up Whitewater's lead to 4-1.

Concordia came back with one run in the bottom half of the fourth to cut the Whitewater lead to 4-2.

UW-W closed out the game with single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh.  Samie Seamon (Antioch, IL/Antioch) led off the fifth with a triple and scored on a sacrifice bunt.  A Mertes single and steal, followed by a sacrifice and ground out, scored a run in the sixth.  Seamon was back at it again in the seventh, with another lead off triple, followed by Ramirez' RBI single.

Mertes went 3x4 from her leadoff spot for the Warhawks, also scoring three times.  Seamon was 2x3 with the two triples, driving in two and scoring twice.  Sophomore righthander Bekka Houda (Lisle, IL/Lisle), 2-0, picked up the complete game win with a five hitter.  She gave up one earned run, walked one and struck out five.

UW-Whitewater, 4-0, will play the College of Saint Benedict and Fontbonne University Sunday in Clermont.
