Baseball Ups Mark to 6-2 with Benedictine Win

Box Score The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team upped its record to 6-2 with a 9-4 win over Benedictine University in Winter Haven, Florida Saturday.

UW-W jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.  Jared Fon (Germantown/Germantown)'s double brought in the first run and Fon scored on a throwing error for the second tally.

Benedictine tied the game with single runs in the second and third, then took a 3-2 lead with another run in the top of the fifth.

David Cladis (Joliet, IL/Joliet Catholic) opened the bottom of the fifth with a single, moved to second on an error, was sacrificed to third, and came home on a fielder's choice to knot the game 3-3.

The Warhawks scored the winning runs in the seventh, plating three with the help of two Benedictine errors.

UW-W pushed across three more in the eighth.  Michael Gonzalez (Delavan/Delavan-Darien) brought in the first run with a double to center, Marty Herum (River Falls/River Falls) singled through the left side to score Gonzalez, and pinch hitter Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere) tripled down the right field line to bring Herum home.

Benedictine tallied its final run in the top of the ninth.

UW-W out hit Benedictine 15-8.  Cladis led the way with a 4x4 day, with Fon going 3x4.  Herum drove in three runs.

Junior righthander Matt Roberts (Manitowoc/Roncalli) went eight and a third innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits.  He walked three and struck out eight.  Brock Liston (Darien, IL/Joliet Catholic) closed out the game.

Benedictine is 6-3.

The UW-W varsity will not play Sunday or Monday, with their next game set for Tuesday the 26th in Auburndale, Florida against Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
