Warhawks Open Season With Two Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 UW-Whitewater defeated Plattsburgh State 3-2, and Carthage College 3-0, to open the season with two wins in Clermont, Florida Friday.  The Warhawks surrendered just six hits in the two games combined.

The Warhawks found themselves down 2-0 early against Plattsburgh State.  The Cardinals opened up a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, scoring the first run on three consecutive hits, and the second run on a ground out.

Emily Epifanio (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South) cut into the lead in the bottom of the first, singling in Mimi Ramirez (Chicago, IL/Trinity) after she reached on a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on an error.  UW-W knotted the score at two in the bottom of the third when Amanda Mertes (Des Plaines, IL/Elk Grove) scored on a fielding error.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth Mertes scored the go ahead run.  Mertes reached earlier in the inning on a single to left, stole second and made it all the way home on a dropped fly ball to the shortstop.

Boyle kept the Cardinal batters in check the rest of the way going 1-2-3 in the sixth and seventh innings while striking out three.  For Boyle, and the Warhawks, it is her first win of the season.  She struck out four while giving up four hits and two runs.

Plattsburgh State committed four errors in the game.

Bekka Houda (Lisle, IL/Lisle) was the story of the Carthage game.  Houda threw a two-hitter while striking out nine en route to her first win, in as many chances, this season.

The Warhawk offense gave Houda all of the support she needed with a run in the second, fifth and sixth.  Samie Seamon (Antioch, IL/Antioch), Deven DuCharme (Hudson/Hudson), and Sarah Fisher (Greenfield/Greenfield) scored the three Warhawk runs while Chelsey Schobert (Belmont/Belmont), Laura Eichenold (Elmwood Park, IL/Trinity) and Paige Evangelista (Wheaton, IL/North) accounted for the RBIs.

The game was error free for both teams.  The Warhawks left five runners on base and the Lady Reds left one.

The Warhawks will play Buffalo State and Concordia (WI) Saturday in Clermont.
