Edgren Leads Warhawks to Third at Little States

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - Anthony Edgren (New Lisbon/New Lisbon), ranked second in the National Wrestling Coaches Association individual poll, won the 285 pound weight class to lead the Warhawks to a third place finish at the 54th Annual Little States Wrestling Tournament hosted by Wabash. The event featured seven teams and an unattached division including Wabash College, the University of Indianapolis, Indiana Tech, Manchester University, unattached from Indiana Tech and Calumet College.

Edgren opened the meet with a major decision followed by a 56 second pin over Wabash's Paul Snyder. Another major decision in his third bout of the day sent him into the finals. Edgren topped Evan Wooding of Indianapolis in a close 9-8 decision. 

Two Warhawks finished second in their weight classes. Corey Meyer (Cary, IL/Cary-Grove) went 2-1 in the 141 pound weight class. He opened with a pin in 0:28 followed by a 3-1 decision to head into the championship. Indy's Justin Kieffer went on to win the weight class. Andrew Pettit (Hoffman Estates, IL/Hoffman Estates) added a second place finish at 184 pounds in similar fashion to Meyer. Pettit notched a technical fall, 16-0 in 5:16 in his first match of the day followed by a major decision, 9-0, over Dennie Brown of Calumet. In the championship bout, Wabash's Riley Lefever picked up the win.

Zac Denny (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) was 3-1 at 125 pounds to finish third. A tight 3-1 loss in his first match of the day dropped Denny into the wrestleback. That is exactly what he did, wrestle his way back with an 8-4 decision followed by a 4-0 decision to advance to the third place match. He was matched against Robbie Carter of Wabash who had beaten him earlier in the day but this time it was Denny who came out on top after grinding out a 4-3 decision.

Maxx Hubbard (Sterling/Newman Central Catholic) went 4-1 at 141 pounds to place third. He registered two technical falls, the first to open the competition with an 18-0 win over Josh Juarez of Manchester stopping the clock in 5:27. He met Christian Rodriguez of Wabash twice over the course of the tournament. In the first meeting, Hubbard tallied the pin in just 37 seconds. The two would meet again in the battle for third place. Hubbard was victorious once again this time with a technical fall, 23-4, in 6:58.

TJ Decker (Pewaukee/Pewaukee) posted a 4-1 record and a third place finish in the tournament at 174 pounds. He opened with a major decision, 14-1, and followed with a 58 second pin over Mark Moldanado of Wabash. Decker fell in a 9-3 decision in his third match of the day but battled back into the third place bout. He pinned fellow teammate Grant Rosenboom in 5:43 for third.

Also competing in the tournament for UW-Whitewater was Anthony Reyes (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) (1-3, 6th at 125), Trevor Pruett (West Bend/West Bend East) (3-2, 5th at 133), Ronnie Hauser (2-2, 5th at 141), Kory Jauch (Rolling Meadows, IL/Rolling Meadows) (2-2, 7th at 149), Cam Loomis (River Falls/River Falls) (1-3, 6th at 149), Connor Fussner (1-2, 7th at 157), Grant Rosenboom (3-2, 4th at 174), and Taylor Hiltenbrandt (2-2, 4th at 184). 

The next dual for Whitewater, ranked ninth in the NWCA, is scheduled for Wednesday, December 11 as the Warhawks head to Eau Claire. The first bout is scheduled to begin at 7:00.
