Men's Soccer Adds Two 'Cups' to Schedule

The Warhawks men's soccer team has paired with two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference universities in the creation of two 'cup' matches this season. UW-Whitewater and UW-Platteville will play for the Shaymus Guinn Cup Sunday, October 6 at 2:00 in Platteville. Later this season, the Warhawks will host UW-Superior for the inaugural Great Lakes Cup Saturday, October 19 at 2:00.

These two cups are specific to Whitewater's competition against the Pioneers and Yellowjackets. The Shaymus Guinn Cup was created in honor of head coach Tony Guinn's son Shaymus who lost his battle with cancer last December. Shaymus was named an honorary Warhawk student-athlete for his interest in, and support of, UW-Whitewater athletics last November. UW-Platteville was chosen as the annual opponent in search of the Shaymus Guinn Cup because of Coach Guinn's ties with the Pioneer program. Guinn played soccer for UW-Platteville from 1985-1987.

UW-Whitewater teamed with UW-Superior for the implementation of the Great Lakes Cup due to the universities' locales. UW-Whitewater is the closest WIAC school to Lake Michigan and UW-Superior lies closest to Lake Superior.

The winner of each match annually will take home and display the trophy until the next match-up between the two teams.
