Warhawks Top River Falls in Day Two of WIAC Tournament

Box Score The Warhawk softball team topped UW-River Falls 9-2 in the second day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to remain unbeaten, 2-0, in the tournament. UW-W will face the only other undefeated team in the tournament, UW-Eau Claire, with a scheduled start at 4:00 in a rematch from Sunday's games that determined the regular season conference champion. Whitewater started the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with Laura Eichenold (Elmwood Park, IL/Trinity) singling with one out. Morgan Krisch (Plainfield, IL/Central) singled with two gone to put two runners on, and both advanced on a passed ball in the next at bat. Joanne Jablonski (Palatine, IL/Palatine) singled to center field to score two and give UW-W the early 2-0 lead after two complete.

The Warhawks added one more run in the bottom of the third. Paige Evangelista (Wheaton, IL/North) reached on an outfielder's error with two outs, a walk put two runners on and Eichenold's single scored Evangelista from second making the score 3-0 in favor of UW-W.

The Falcons cut the lead down to two with one run off of two hits in the top of the fourth.

Whitewater answered with a big offensive inning in their half of the fourth. Krisch led off with a triple to center field. Jablonski followed with a single to score the first run of the inning for UW-W. DuCharme pinch ran at first and stole second during the next at bat. Kelly McGrail (Tinley Park, IL/V.J. Andrew) sacrifice bunted to move DuCharme to third. Amanda Grigsby pinch hit and reached first base safely on a fielder's choice as DuCharme drew the attention away from the play at first and dove back to third safely to put runners on the corners. Grigsby stole second putting two runners in scoring position. Mimi Ramirez (Chicago, IL/Trinity) bunted for a single to the right side that brought DuCharme in to score and moved Grigsby to third. Ramirez stole second, the third stolen base in the inning, to put runners on second and third. Evangelista brought two more across the plate with a single to right center giving the Warhawks four in the inning and a 7-1 advantage.

River Falls would score one in the top of the sixth but the Warhawks answered with two more in their half of the inning making the score 9-2. Whitewater's defense held in the top of the seventh with a three-up, three-down inning to end the game.

Jablonski led the Warhawks with a perfect performance from the plate going 2x2 with three runs batted in and a walk. Eichenold and Krisch each posted two hits in the game with Eichenold posting two RBIs and Krisch adding two runs scored.

Junior hurler Katie Boyle (Greendale/Thomas More) picked up her second win of the tournament going the distance on the mound for Whitewater to improve her record to 15-4.

UW-Whitewater improves to 31-9 overall this season and UW-RF falls to 26-13.

The Warhawks topped UW-Platteville 8-0 in five innings in their first game of the tournament Friday. The WIAC tournament will conclude Sunday with the winner receiving an automatic bid into the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III tournament.
