Schaefer and Bayliss Fall in Quarterfinal

Friday
The UW-Whitewater doubles team of Kalla Schaefer (Madison/Madison Memorial) and Alexandra Bayliss (Sheboygan/North) lost in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship in Cary, North Carolina Friday.  UW-W, unseeded, fell 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-3 to the Claremont Mudd duo of Kristin Lim and Jessie Huang, the fourth seed.

The Whitewater duo was up 4-3 in the second set with CMS serving.  Schaefer and Bayliss broke their opponents' serve, which included three double faults, to go up 5-3 and take control of the set.  In set three UW-W trailed 2-0, then rallied to tie 2-2.  CMS went up 4-3 and then, turning the tables, broke Whitewater's serve for a 5-3 lead on their way to winning the set and clinching the match.

The NCAA III Women's Tennis Championship chooses sixteen doubles teams for the tournament.  Lim and Huang will face the team of Laura Danzig and Gabby Devlin of Amherst College in a semifinal Saturday.  The tournament semifinals and finals will be held Saturday, along with men's and women's singles championship matches.

UW-W finished the season with a 25-12 record in flight one doubles.  The Warhawk duo won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship.  Schaefer and Bayliss defeated Malavika Padmanabhan and Brenna Kelly of Emory University in the first round Thursday.

Schaefer earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III All-America honors twice, advancing to the ITA tournament final eighth in 2009 and 2011.  She also paired with Bayliss to earn a spot in the ITA doubles finals last fall, where the duo placed eighth.

Schaefer also earned a berth in singles play for the 2012 NCAA III tournament, where she lost to Lim in a first round match, 6-2, 6-2, Thursday.
