Warhawks Split with Chicago

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The ninth ranked Warhawk softball team split a doubleheader at the University of Chicago Saturday afternoon dropping the first game 5-1 and winning the nightcap 6-2.

Just two hits were recorded by the two teams combined in the first three innings and the scoreboard showed zeros going into the fourth. Emily Epifanio (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South) notched her fourth homer of the season with a long ball over the left field fence to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.

Chicago bounced back with two runs in their half of the inning and added two more in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 4-1 in favor of the Maroons.

UC posted another run in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach and take the win 5-1.

Epifanio was 1x2 from the plate with the solo homer. Morgan Krisch (Plainfield, IL/Central) had a 1x1 performance in the batter's box while drawing two walks.

Junior righty Katie Boyle (Greendale/Thomas More) went the distance on the mound for the Warhawks throwing six complete allowing five runs on nine hits while fanning three and walking three.

Whitewater got their bats going right away in the second game of the day with back-to-back doubles from Mimi Ramirez (Chicago, IL/Trinity) and Epifanio to take an early first inning lead 1-0.

The Maroons rallied with two of their own off of three hits in the bottom of the inning but the Warhawks held the momentum.

Amanda Mertes (Des Plaines, IL/Elk Grove) and Ramirez led off the top of the third with back-to-back singles. A sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out. Epifanio drew a walk to load the bases. Laura Eichenold (Elmwood Park, IL/Trinity) connected with a single to right field to score Mertes and Samie Seamon (Antioch, IL/Antioch) drew a walk in the next at bat to score Ramirez. UW-W had a 3-2 advantage after two and a half innings.

The top of the fourth saw two more Warhawks cross the plate. Mertes notched a one-out triple down the right field line and scored on a wild pitch to make the score 4-2. Three consecutive singles allowed Ramirez to cross the plate for the third time in the game.

Eichenold rounded out the scoring with a solo shot to center field in the top of the seventh leading to the final score, 6-2 in favor of Whitewater.

Mertes, Ramirez, Epifanio and Eichenold combined for ten hits in the game including a homerun, triple and two doubles with five runs scored and four RBIs.

Freshman hurler Bekka Houda (Lisle, IL/Lisle) recorded the complete game win allowing two runs on six hits without allowing a free pass and striking out seven.

UW-W is 19-5 this season. Chicago moves to 18-8.

Whitewater has a home doubleheader scheduled against Cardinal Stritch Sunday, April 15 beginning at 2 p.m. at van Steenderen Field in Whitewater.
