In game one it was all Steve Maher of the Tommies as he went the distance, giving up just two hits and one walk while fanning seven Warhawk hitters.
The Tommies scored a run in the top of the first, the fourth and the seventh and sat back to watch Maher do the rest.
Mike Mierow (Brookfield/Central) and
Jared Fon (Germantown/Germantown) were the two Warhawks that solved Maher for at least one at bat each. Mierow singled to left in the third and Fon singled to left in the second. Fon also reached base in the fourth on the lone walk issued by Maher.
Jack Larsen (Menomonee Falls/Menomonee Falls) pitched the full game for UW-W. Larsen gave up five hits and three runs while walking one and striking out two.
Matt Beyer (Janesville/Parker) scored the first run of the second game on a homerun to left field. The Warhawks added two more in the third. The first run came on a sacrifice fly by Fred Gomalak that plated
Andrew Bauer (Hartland/Arrowhead) and the second run was scored in the rarest of ways when
JT Schneider (Oak Creek/Oak Creek) stole home.
With a 3-0 lead in the sixth the Warhawks surrendered one run and then two more in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
The Warhawks wasted little time and scored five runs in the top of the eighth to take an 8-3 lead. Three RBI singles scored four of the runs and a sacrifice fly plated the other. The clutch hits were provided by Fon,
Ryan Leavitt (Merrill/Merrill), Beyer, and
Travis Wessels (Tomah/Tomah).
Eric Schmitz (Fond du Lac/Fond du Lac) picked up the win pitching the last one and a third innings for UW-W. Schmitz game up just one hit and struck out three.
Aaron Leitner (Chilton/Chilton) started the game for the Warhawks and pitched five and a third giving up six hits and one run before giving way to
Colin Grove (Beloit/Memorial). Grove gave up four hits and two runs while striking out two.
Schneider and
Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington) were the only two Warhawks to record multiple hits and Beyer and Wessels recorded multiple RBIs. Each of the 1 through 8 batters for UW-W collected at least one hit.
The Warhawks will not play again until March 22 when they travel to Florida for their annual spring trip. The Warhawks will play six games on the seven day trip. UW-W's first home game, and first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest, is slated for April 5 against UW-Oshkosh at Prucha Field in Whitewater beginning at 1:00 pm.
