Box Score Kyle Stewart (Onalaska/Onalaska) pitched a four hit shutout in a 5-0 victory over Southern Maine Tuesday in Lake Myrtle, Florida. The Warhawks, 6-4 overall, used timely hitting and solid pitching to take down the Huskies who are now 6-6 overall.
The first three innings were rather uneventful from a scoring standpoint. Stewart kept the Husky bats quiet while Greg Holmes stymied the Warhawk bats. Stewart gave up two of his four hits in the first three innings. The Warhawks tallied a hit in each of the first three frames but were unable to advance any runners past second.
Stewart retired the Huskies 1-2-3 in the top of the fourth and got a run of support in the bottom of the inning.
Marty Herum (River Falls/River Falls) singled to start the inning and advanced to third on a single by
Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington) with one out.
Mike Mierow (Brookfield/Central) followed with a sacrifice fly that plated Herum and gave the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.
Stewart continued to be in control on the mound facing the minimum in the next four innings while striking out four and giving up just one hit.
The Warhawks tallied two more runs in the seventh to go up 3-0. The first runner,
JT Schneider (Oak Creek/Oak Creek), scored on an error and the second,
Jared Fon (Germantown/Germantown), scored on a sacrifice fly by
Matt Beyer (Janesville/Parker).
Two more runs in the bottom of the eighth extended UW-W's lead to five. The Warhawks recorded four hits in the inning beginning with a Mierow leadoff double. Mierow came around to score when the next batter,
Fred Gromalak (Kettle Moriane/Kettle Moraine), singled.
David Cladis (Joliet, IL/Joliet Catholic) came in as a pinch runner for Gromalak and eventually scored on a Fon single.
Stewart gave up his fourth and final hit in the top of the ninth and earned the complete game victory to improve to 2-0 this season.
The Warhawks were led by Mierow who was 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI, and
Jared Fon (Germantown/Germantown) who was 4-for-5 with one run and one RBI. Schneider recorded three hits in the game and Herum chipped in two. Fon and Schneider lead the team in multiple hit games this season with four each.
The Warhawks will battle Southern Maine again Wednesday.
