Warhawks Upset by Benedictine

Box Score UW-Whitewater, ranked fifteenth in the D3baseball.com poll, fell to Benedictine University 7-3 in Auburndale, Florida Friday.

Benedictine scored twice in the bottom of the second on two hits and an assist from a Warhawk error.  They doubled their score with three more hits, and another UW-W error, in the fourth.  Another unearned run upped the Benedictine lead to 5-0.  Kyle Stewart (Onalaska/Onalaska), in the outfield after earning a win on the mound Thursday, broke the shutout with a RBI single in the top of the seventh.  Benedictine added an unearned run in the seventh and another tally in the eighth to build a 7-1 lead.  The Warhawks tacked on two in the ninth, helped by a BU error and another run producing single from Stewart.

Jack Larsen (Menomonee Falls/Menomonee Falls), 0-2, went the first four innings for UW-W, giving up three earned runs on seven hits.  Justin Mortensen (Hartland/Arrowhead) went the final four, giving up one earned run on three hits, with two walks and no strikeouts.  Kevin Crowley, 2-1, went 8.1 innings for Benedictine, allowing seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts. 

Whitewater's offensive attack was led by third baseman Jared Fon (Germantown/Germantown), 2x4 with a run scored, and Stewart, 2x4 with the two runs batted in.  The heart of the Benedictine order, first baseman Ryan Mullin at three, catcher Tom Higgins in the cleanup spot, and third baseman Steve Cocat batting fifth, were all 2x4 with a run scored and one RBI.

Benedictine is 6-4.  UW-W is 4-3, with a game against the University of Chicago in Lake Myrtle, Florida Saturday.   The Warhawks' first home game of 2012 will be Thursday, April 5 with UW-Oshkosh visiting Miller Stadium at Prucha Field for a 1:00 doubleheader.
