Sutter, Edgren Lead Warhawk Wrestlers

Anthony Edgren (New Lisbon/New Lisbon) and Grant Sutter (Dodgeville/Dodgeville) won individual titles to lead UW-Whitewater to a third place finish in the ten team field at the North Central College Invitational in Naperville, Illinois Saturday.

Eleventh ranked (by D3wrestle.com) Wabash College won the meet with 140 points, followed by number nineteen Augustana (IL) with 134.5.  Whitewater, ninth in the D3 poll, was third at 102, followed by North Central 80, Mount Saint Joseph 72.5, Concordia (WI) 56.5, Wheaton 18.5, Milwaukee School of Engineering 17, Lakeland College 13.5, and Knox College 5.5.

Edgren bulldozed his way through the 285 pound bracket.  After a first round bye, he pinned Sean Brooks of Mount Saint Joseph College in 6:38, and then his time on the mat diminished.  He pinned Dylan Mahler of North Central in 2:24, and in the championship match Edgren dropped John Schraidt of Augustana College (IL) in 0:54.  Edgren is 9-1 this season.

Sutter upheld is number five ranking from D3wrestle.com with three wins at 133 pounds, raising his record to 9-1 on the season.  In the first round he won by technical fall (16-0) over Eduardo Orihuela of Lakeland, then beat Nick Miceli of MSOE 18-7.  In the weight class title match Sutter defeated eighth ranked Tim Locksmith of Wabash 4-2.

Three Warhawks earned second place in the tournament.  Jake Fredrickson, ranked seventh in D3 at 141, won his first three matches before losing to top ranked Nathan Fitzenreider of North Central, 1-0, in the final.  Shane Siefert (Mundelein, IL/Carmel), ranked tenth nationally, won his first two matches to get to the 197 pound final, where he lost to Austin O'Neill of Wabash 4-2. 

Elroy Perkin (Greenfield/Whitnall) led two Warhawk entrants at 149 pounds.  Perkin advanced through the bracket with three wins to reach the title match, where he fell to sixth-ranked Greg Sanders of Concordia 13-5.  One of Perkin's wins was a 2-1 decision over teammate Tom Gerszewski (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South).

Justin Birschbach (Fond du Lac/Fond du Lac), wrestling at 184, had the most wins by a Warhawk wrestler in the tourney.  Birschbach went 4-1, but with an early loss had to wrestle back to earn third place.

UW-W will compete in the JWU Tournament in Providence, Rhode Island December 21.  The next home competition for the Warhawks will be January 26 at 7:00, with UW-Eau Claire visiting Williams Center.
