Box Score UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh waged a heated battle on a cold night, with UW-W coming out on top 3-1 at Fiskum Field in Whitewater on Senior Night.
Oshkosh had the first opportunity to get on the board, but Warhawk goalie
Matt Mikesell (Waukesha/Kettle Moraine) stopped Chris Kurth just 1:07 into the game. Whitewater tested Titan goalie Nick Barry twice in the first fifteen minutes, but were kept scoreless. Mikesell's second save of the game came at 13:58. UW-W broke the deadlock at 16:02, with senior
Max Hey (Hudson/Hudson) booting in his first goal of the season from directly in front of the goal.
UW-W forward
Logan Fye (Rockford, IL/Winnebago) may have had the best opportunity of the half, and probably the game, at 25:42, dribbling in on Barry and faking him off his feet. Fye's move took him to the left side of the goal, where a Titan defender angled in behind Barry and forced Fye's shot to hit the post. One more shot by UW-W in the half failed to get past Barry as the half ended with Whitewater on top 1-0.
The Titans made their bid to tie the game with three shots on goal in the first thirteen minutes of the second period, but Mikesell kept all the shots out of the net. UW-O's Ryan Hanna finally found the mark at 67:42 to knot the score at 1-1.
Less than two minutes later, at 69:20, another Warhawk senior found the net for the first time this year, as
Alex Szarzynski (Greenfield/South Milwaukee) knocked in what proved to be the game winner.
The game got more than a little heated in the aftermath of the goal, but the officials asserted control, and at 74:38
Sam Novak (Milton, Wis./Milton) scored his fourth goal of the season to make it 3-1 and settle the outcome.
There were a total of seven yellow cards and three red cards issued in the game, which has been a long-standing rivalry between the schools. Four of the yellows and all three red cards came in the second half.
Whitewater had a narrow 14-12 edge in shots. The Warhawks also had more fouls, 18-16, and the game's only offside call.
UW-W is 8-5-3 overall and finishes 2-1-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-O ended their regular season 9-5-3, and 2-2 in league play. Although it would be a long shot, both teams will watch the NCAA Division III tournament selection show Monday.
