Schaefer and Bayliss Advance to Finals; Twice

Kalla Schaefer (Madison/Madison Memorial) advanced to the championship in the top half of the singles bracket and Alexandra Bayliss (Sheboygan/North) advanced to the title match in the bottom half at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship in St. Peter, Minnesota Saturday.  The winner from the top half and the winner from the bottom of half of the singles bracket will face-off to crown an overall singles champion on Sunday.  Schaefer and Bayliss also teamed up to advance to the championship in doubles play.

Schaefer defeated Tai Lucero of Coe in three sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) and Alex Erickson of Gustavus in two (6-3, 6-2), after winning two matches Friday, to advance to the semifinals where she will play against the number one seed Kathryn Schmidt of Carleton.  Schaefer is the three seed in the field.

Bayliss defeated Beth Larson of Lawrence and Cami Czech of Luther in two sets, both with scores of 7-5, 6-3.  Bayliss won two matches on Friday as well and will now face off against McKenneah Edwards of St. Mary's in the semifinal match.

Together Schaefer and Bayliss defeated Michelle Schupbach and Tai Lucer of Coe 8-3, and Katherine Schmidt and Anne Lombardi of Carleton 8-4 to advance to the finals against Megan Gaard and Alex Erickson of Gustavus.

Teammates Annie Smith (Algonquin, IL/H.D. Jacobs) and Sydney Divelbiss (Middleton/Middleton) lost in the quarterfinals to Gaard and Erickson 8-4.

Running in conjunction with the ITA Midwest Regional Championship is the Gustavus Fall Invite.  At the number one singles draw Kelsey Fitzgerald (Loves Park, IL/Belvidere North) advanced to the finals before falling to Karrie Williams of UW-La Crosse 6-1, 6-1.

At two singles it was an all Whitewater final featuring Hillary Franzen (Wausau/West) and Crystal Zhao (Hohhot, China/No. 28 High School of Hohhot).  Franzen won due to forfeit.  Both of their paths to the finals involved intense three set matches.

The four singles draw saw Abby Day (Hartford/Hartford) advancing to the finals before losing to Mallory Shellum of Gustavus 6-1, 6-2.

The doubles team of Marta Kinsman (Jefferson/Jefferson) and Zhao fell in the quarterfinals to Megan Fallon and Lindsay Seccombe of UW-La Crosse 8-6.

The ITA Midwest Regional will conclude on Sunday.
