The UW-W tennis team has advanced four players, or doubles teams, to the quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Regional hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College at the Swanson Indoor Tennis Center in Saint Peter, Minnesota.
Kalla Schaefer (Madison/Madison Memorial) and Alexandra Bayliss (Sheboygan/North) each won twice Friday to make it into the round of sixteen. The duo also teamed up to go 2-0 in doubles play, joining teammates Sydney Divelbiss (Middleton/Middleton) and Annie Smith (Algonquin, IL/H.D. Jacobs), also 2-0, in the group of eight doubles teams still alive in the championship bracket. Bayliss' second win came against Erin Gudul of Carleton College, who shared the #9 seed.
Competition in the Midwest Regional continues Saturday and concludes Sunday. The singles and doubles champions from this weekend's tournament advance to the Oct. 13-16 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama. Schaefer won the Midwest Regional in 2010 to advance to the final eight at the national tourney, earning ITA All-America honors.
