Warhawks Take Two in Clermont, Stang Sets Record

The Warhawk softball team notched two wins Saturday with an 8-4 win over Keene State and a 7-2 route of Hamline University in the second day of play in the National Training Center (NTC) spring games in Clermont, Florida.

Amanda Mertes (Des Plaines, IL/Elk Grove) started things off for Whitewater beating out a bunt to start the game and advancing all the way to third on a throwing error by Hamline. Mimi Ramirez (Chicago, IL/Trinity) put down the sacrifice bunt in the next at bat to score Mertes for an RBI. The Warhawks held the early 1-0 lead through the first inning.

UW-W added four more runs in the top of the second. Designated player Morgan Krisch (Plainfield, IL/Central) led off the inning reaching on an error. Shauna Binsfeld (Cedarburg/Grafton) walked to put two on for Jordyn Gaza (Mundelein, IL/Carmel Catholic). Gaza made the most of the opportunity with a three run homer over center field. Three singles from the next three Warhawk batters loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly to center from Lauren Rankins (Marengo, IL/Marengo) scored  Haley Krueger (Beach Park, IL/Waukegan). Whitewater was up 5-0 after one and a half.

Hamline put one on the board in the bottom of the second after Jackie Brigl led off the inning with a double and came around to score on a single to left center.

The Warhawks put up two more runs in the top of the fourth and Hamline answered with one in the bottom of five to tally the final, 7-2, in favor of UW-W.

Mertes went 3x3 at the plate with two runs scored to lead Whitewater. Ramirez, Krisch and Krueger all posted 2x3 outings in the batter's box in the game. Gaza notched three RBI's with the teams first homerun of the season.

Right hander Sammy Kessler (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) picked up the win for UW-W going five innings and allowing four hits with no earned runs.

Senior left-hander Jessica Stang (Minnetonka, MN/Minnetonka) had a record day on the mound for UW-W breaking her previous record for strikeouts in a game. Stang's 16 K's Saturday topped her mark of 15 set March 19, 2010 against Ripon College. Whitewater's offense provided a cushion for Stang hitting .500 in the game.

UW-W used a seven run fourth inning to roll past Keene Saturday morning. Two singles and an error loaded the bases to start the fourth. Haley Krueger (Beach Park, IL/Waukegan) shot a liner through the right side bringing two Warhawk runners across the plate. Another single loaded the bases once again. With one out, Lauren Rankins (Marengo, IL/Marengo)'s single to left field scored three as Rankins was able to advance to second on a Keene State error. Emily Epifanio (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South) singled in the next at bat to score Rankins. Another Keene State error put a runner on the bases for Whitewater. With two outs, Kassie Krueger (Plover/SPASH) notched a double to top-off the scoring for UW-W with Samie Seamon (Antioch, IL/Antioch) crossing the plate bringing the inning total to seven and the game total to eight.

Rankins, Epifanio and Kassie Krueger (Plover/SPASH) were all perfect from the plate going 4x4, 3x3 and 2x2 respectively. The three Warhawks also combined for four of the six Whitewater RBI's in the game. Amanda Mertes (Des Plaines, IL/Elk Grove) added a 2x3 day in the batter's box scoring two runs. Jordyn Gaza (Mundelein, IL/Carmel Catholic) posted a 2x3 game and Haley Krueger (Beach Park, IL/Waukegan) was 1x2 with two RBI's and a run scored.

The Warhawks are 3-1 this season.  The Warhawks will continue play in the NTC spring games with two games Sunday at 8:30 and 12:30 CT against Loras College and Tufts University.
